Title: Dimidiochromis compressiceps
Post by: Steve on December 21, 2013, 02:01:34 PM
Got another fish for the 265 tank. He's floating right now in a bag then will spend the next few weeks in quarantine but soon as the big tank is up he and the big Venustus will be the first two fish to call it home. I've been eyeballin' this compressiceps for a month now at the shop and since I set up all the holding tanks in the filter room the other day I now have room to start picking up fish for the big tank and hold them till its ready. He's a good 6" and not showing any real good colors yet but has some slight colors starting, he's going to be a good looking fish for sure once full grown.

I'll post a pic of him shortly.

I love how thin these fish look when they look directly at you straight on.

They had a male and female pair in the tank and the female that was in the tank was smaller and had kind'a a brownish tint to her.

I just took a pic of it, I'm terrible at venting so you tell me. Better be a male or I'm taking it back tomorrow if not.

I sure hope so. Anyone else got any input on how the vents look? I'm just trying to decide what to do with this fish if it is not a male as claimed to be.

I'll try to get another but that's about as good a macro close up as I can get I'm afraid, with holding the camera in one hand and fish in the other.

Just put the fish in a vise,  then both hands will be free. :P

Still looks like it could go either way to me.

Thanks, glad to hear it's most likely a male because that is for sure what I was wanting.

Yep there is a blue tint to him which is more visible from from certain angles than other angles. Not super noticeable yet but hopefully he'll get more color as he grows bigger. I can tell you one thing is for sure, he has a HUGE appetite :o It's a real job just tryin to get food past him and to the other fish before he opens that big mouth and sucks in everything he can find.

This is definitely a Male.  The red on the top edges of the dorsal - the tips of the dorsal and anal fin appear to be pointed not rounded - that is the big indicator.

He looks pretty small anyways.  I have had several eye biters over the past 3 years.  My dominate 10" male only started to color up when he hit 7".  The egg spots only appeared at 6".

Give him time you will see.... :)

FWIW, I've seen some females with red-tipped dorsal fins.

When male D. compressiceps color up seems to vary a lot, but when they do they seem to go from bland to really nice overnight. My firsts one years ago colored up at ~4". My other two 5" and 6.5" respectively.

Here's one of mine:
