Do not remember how why or when I picked this one up. Can y'all help find what this is. It has what looks to be red speckles on the fins

Maybe a eureka red peacock?

Looks to be a female that's a little beat up .
There's no color so I can't even guess what kind .

FWIW, I'm not as convinced that it's a female. It's unclear, but will become more clear as it gets older (should know by 3"+).
As for what it is, it's an Aulonocara. Anything more than that is basically impossible to say with 100% accuracy right now. That's why it's important to buy fish from a reputable source and know exactly what your buying while it's too young to identify by just looking at it.
I love Malawian species, but Auloncara are my least favorite because it's so darn hard to ID them. Mix up a bunch of young and all the ones that are females will still be nearly impossible to figure out once they've grown up. :o
