Title: Oh boy, I think my canister filters are both dying.
Post by: greg y on November 16, 2013, 09:19:14 PM
So last night I notice my eheim canister making a annoying gurgling swoosh sound so I fiddled with the prefilter on the intake and it didn't help, so then I hit the power switch on the strip and shut everythinv down for a few minutes.

Turned it all back on and it helped a bit but then I realize that my other canister, the fluval didn't turn back on, so I had to open it up and play with the propeller thingy to free it up.

Tonight it's buzzing off and on, buzz, hum, nothing, buzz, hum, nothing.

It appears to be flowing right but it sounds like the propeller is probably starting and stopping off and on etc...

When it rains it pours around here, ugh, should I just order a new propeller thing or what?

When you do your maintenance on them do you clean out the well that the impeller sits in?
I've found that if I don't pull the impeller and give it a give go-round with a toothbrush and a q-tip that it tends to impede functionality in my Eheim.
All of the HOB filters as well come to think of it.

No I haven't been, I bought them both used, the I'm not to sure on the fluval 406 design, when I went to pull out the impeller it came disconnected from the shaft and I'm not sure if it is suspossed to.

I found a FX5 for sale used but money is tight, I really should just fix this and stick it out. Guess if I ordered a new impellor the worst thing that could happen is I'd have an extra part

The fluval magnet and impeller post do come apart.  Just push the post back in.

They seem to be both working fine again, knock on wood, although the eheim wet-dry canister 2227, is only functioning as a regular straight canister and no longer does it's ebb flow cycle thing, not sure why it stopped, the air way isn't blocked, but that doesnt bother me too much.

The fluval is still making a slight noise but not enough to warrent messing with.

I have finally got my bb in check and don't want to disturb it until needed

edit: after tonight's water change the fluval wouldn't start until I tilted it almost on it's side then it sprung back into action, anyone know anything about why it would do that?
