Title: Best DIY Tumbler?
Post by: lightaddict08 on November 07, 2013, 10:23:23 PM
Sorry if this is in the wrong location, please move it if it is best fit for general discussion.

So in my research to find and/or make tumblers for fry I found a ton of examples, but I couldn't tell which was actually the best. Does anybody have a preference of one style vs others? I've seen some made out of fluorescent light shields, some out of siphon pumps, some out of under-gravel filters. What works best for the couplings to also hold the netting in place? Is it better to have air flowing from under the netting, or just from near the top?

Thanks in advance!

this is the one I like. I made with what I had left from my sponge filters.

Look up kgtropics on YouTube. He's really intelligent. He does the sponge filter parts method too. Breaks it down simple as can be too.

Thanks for suggesting kgtropicals. His video was great! I'll likely be ordering these soon!
Just for reference I've attached the link below.

Recipe from kens fish for 4 tumblers. Plus you will need pantyhose and small rubber bands.

I made a few tumblers based on an aquariacentral post I saw, but the problem I am having is the tubes are not creating enough "upward draw" or flow to make the eggs move, I am going to experiment with a longer top tube (i was putting the airstone as deep as it would go) but I think my top portion tube might be too short, if that doesn't fix it I am considering restricting the flow at the top elbow by blocking 50% or so of the out tube hoping that might create more flow.

With a big whisper filter going full blast I can't even get these to move my eggs (or peas as a test), but I hope to fix this soon as I sure could use them :)

I did buy one egg tumbler from wet thumb a few years ago I can't recall the maker but it's the biggest piece of garbage out there, the parts don't stay together, it's too small and I just fight with it constantly, that is why I was trying the DIY tumbler here.

Get the one in the top photo.  They work great.  Jehmco.com has them for 4 bucks.  Can't go wrong.  I use them and they work awesome.  Lots of fry to prove it.  Good luck.

Maybe try reducing the size of the up-pipe after the 2nd coupler.
