Title: Stock List - Input please
Post by: Steve on October 28, 2013, 12:59:11 AM
This is not the complete stock list yet, still have probably another 8 or so species to add to it but so far this is what I have been trying to research and what I want to stock in that big 265g 7ftx2ftx31" tank I'm working on. Would some of you guys that are more "In the know" when it comes to species mind taking a look at this and seeing if there are any red flags that go up to you such as...this won't work well in any size tank with that fish, or gonna have to watch that one etc etc... I'm sure you know what I mean. Basically just trying to narrow down what I like the looks of and want ahead of time so I have a game plan and not just go out buying what strikes me as pretty then have it cause me all sorts of headaches later on down the road.

BTW these will all be males, and I hope to find most of them at least starting to color up or already coloring. Not full grown adults probably, but defiantly far from juvies that's for sure.

Dimidiochromis Compressiceps
Champsochromis caeruleus
Venustus
Placidochromis milomo (Super VC10)
Cyrtocara Moorii (Blue Dolphin)
Nimbochromis livingstonii
White knight Alhi
Sciaenochromis fryeri
Placidochromis electra (deep water hap)
Frontosa
Protomelas sp. "Spilonotus Tanzania"
OB Peacock
Lemon Jake
Dragon blood
AULONOCARA RED EUREKA
AULONOCARA MAULANA
ALBUS KANDE ISLAND
COPADOCHROMIS MLOTO "GREEN FACE FLOURESCENT"
AULONOCARA ALBINO RED
Tramitichromis Intermedius
Protomelas Taeniolatus (Super Red Empress Fire Hap)
Some male Yellow Labs

I'd take the front out seems like you are asking for a stressed fish with that stock list.  Everything else seems pretty standard for an all male show tank.  The ones I recognize at least.

I second removing the front from the list, also the Albus kande island and the Copadichromis are unlikely to color up in that mix.

The front and the Albus kande island I can replace with something else without being too bummed, but the Champsochromis caeruleus is a must have. That's actually one of the main top two fish I want in the tank for sure.

The Champsocrhomis will be pretty big in that tank (they're big in any tank), but should work.  I was speaking of the Copadichromis "green face fluorescent".  I have them, they're not overly aggressive, which may be a problem as the rest of your list is on the aggressive side for haps,  I've got one in my male tank who's doing alright, but the most aggressive fish I have is a red empress, which is modereately aggressive in comparison to some of yours on the list.

Lots of neat fish on that list!

Echoing the above, not sure how happy the front would be.  :(

Since you'll have no females, some of the similar species selections aren't a concern. For example venustus/livingstonii/VC10 or C. caeruleus/D. compressiceps, etc. There might still be aggression among those that look similar, but the tank is so big the odds are much in your favor that it'll be alright.

The P. electra are a smaller and less boisterous hap, so he might not do as well. The smallest peacocks might not do well in time. You can give it a shot though and if there's anything that appears to not be working out well, then make adjustments. Unless you're stocking with really large, adult fish there should be time to make sure it all works out well.

Excellent guys this is a big help and is just the info I was looking for. I'll make a few adjustments to the list and update it for review once I finish deciding what else I'd like to round the list out with.
I appreciate the help thanks 8)

I must be learning something from this site.  When I say the front listed, I knew you guys were going to say they needed to be in a single species tank.   ;)

I'm going to have a similar tank soon.  Heard my brother is coming to finish up his "work" for me.  Refinish a wood floor and put in my tank.

I wouldn't say they necessarily need to be in  a species only tank, I just don't think it would work out in that tank with that stock list.  Fronts actually fit in nicely with a lot of South Americans they seem to have the same temperament.  And I think you could even make it work in a all male show tank if you picked your other old worlds carefully.  That's from my experience I'm sure others differ.

Yeah the front was one that I somewhat knew would probably have to be taken off the list. I know some guys keep a single front in Peacocks tanks and such, but with some of the bit more aggressive haps I have on the list I thought that might be one that would have to be removed from the list.

I would add a pheno to the list, but not sure how it would work out with the other placidochromis.  I have never mixed them before.

IME P. phenochilus is much more robust than P. electra.

Yes, it is.  They are awesome when they get bigger, one of my favorites.

I don't common name If I can help it.  I have P. phenochilus with P. milomo and they don't even notice eachother.  The P. milomo does get after the P. electras I have, both of them - the makonde version and the deep water version.  The P. phenochilus is probalby 4th in rank out of 30 and doesn't bother anyone and no one bothers him, they're really nice fish.

Don't worry Rich you are not alone. The only reason I have those is because I had them written down because of the research I have been doing on them. Other than that I suck at knowing proper names, and can hardly even pronounce most of them  :o
