I have been looking and looking and all I find is "reef related answers"
If doing a sump on a decently stocked freshwater set up what is a ideal GPH turn over rate?
-
How big is the tank? How many fish? What size of the fish? Are you over feeding? What size is the sump?

These are all great questions, I was looking to get a ruff idea so I can plan ahead
It will be a 240 gallon tank, and It will be a all male hap/peacock tank.
I am looking at doing a DIY style sump, the 3 drawer plastic container and fill the first two drawers with bio-balls and scrubbies, have holes drill thru these two levels to allow the water to flow into the tank that its sitting in and then going thru the rest of the sump until it get's to the return pump and then it goes back into the tank. I am going to take your advice from a earlier post and put the blue filter pad on the top layer for easy maintenance.
I am trying to work with what I have, and for a return pump I only have a mag 7 right now, so in addition to the sump I was going to install 2 ac 110 on the back of the tank with a sponge and bio rings.

You can use the 7 for now it will be doing between 600 to 500 gph. The other thing you need to do is put the filter pad at the top and the bio media at the bottom. What happens when you have the bio media at the top you are pretty much creating a nitrate factory. You don't even need the blue stuff you can go to Joanne's and get quilt batting and cut it to the size you desire.

thanks again for your help.

With the batting from the craft store, how do you determine that it has not been treated with fire retardent or similar and rendered unsafe for fish?
I was looking at some the other day and was unable, or uneducated enough, to be sure of a decision.

Try catching it on fire! Generally i just get the big bulk roll. like 15 bucks for a 90in x15 yard roll

Um - What if the material IS flammable, you will go to jail if you do this in the store ! LMAO !

I can see it now, a post from Riche, Well I had to sell off everything just to get enough $$ to bail myself out of jail. Is there anyone out there that could help a poor sole.... :o

Just buy 100% polyester fill. Mine says 'Non-allergenic' for what it's worth.

would a mag 12 be ok or would a mag 24 be two much?
-
Up to you 24s suck in my opinion shafts snape off all the time.

So a 12 would be good in this set up? I have the option of installing a mag 7 along with the mag 12 if you think its needed.
I'm Asking you Dan, since your are the sump guy (thats what I was told:) )

Double overflows or single? Battery will die soon so when I get home ill go more into detail

I have 2 stacks draining into the sump and one return line going to the tank and I will be making a spray bar( I think) ;D

Mag 24's have a tendency to blow the impellers apart this is why I think they suck. I know they did discontinue them due to this issue.
Now on to the turn over rate... There is really no good answer for this every tank is different. So lets say you aim for 3 to 4 times turn over in a hour. So a mag 12 is 1200 gph per hour at 0 head you will be between 3 and 5 feet of head so you will be at 1150 and 1120 gph i dunno what size the tank is 240 i assume. Even at 1120 you will be doing 4.7 times the turn over of the tank in a hour. A spray bar can lower the flow also so this is something to watch for and have a back up if it doesn't work. I prefer using locline but that is just me.
