The only reason I didn't list those as my favorite is because I currently have a group of them. But they are a close second.
-
I need to start Googling all these!

After Googling... these are pretty cool!!!
-
Definately - ilangi
Like Ken - I had to google all of these...
-
Iangi has been my long-term favorite but since I've had them for a few years now I've become fond of the Purple Rainbow from Lupota. They're not very common but can be stunning in the right conditions.
-
I understand the ilangi is hard to come by and is endangered? I'm really considering seeking out a wild caught group.

If it's endangered then why would you want a wild caught group?

That's just what I heard, I don't know if it's true. They are going to take them from the lake anyhow.

I would question your source. It's unlikely that any species in Lake Tanganyika is truly endangered. I checked the CITES (www.cites.org) list to see if they're listed there. That's the international authority for documenting which species are officially considered endangered, protected or threatened. Since none of the Tropheus variants are listed there, I would suspect what you heard is a rumor created by exporters or importers to artificially kick up demand (and consequently prices) or it's someone innocently passing on incorrect information. The one other possibility is that because collecting along the Congo shoreline has been quite dangerous for more than a decade now due to the rebel insurgence in the remote eastern side of the country. That may have been translated into the variant being labeled as "endangered". It's much more likely that the fish collectors are the ones who are endangered! There are sources of tank-raised T. moori Ilangi available so even if you're rightfully concerned about obtaining a wild group of a purportedly endangered species, you do have options. But truthfully, without corroboration from known reliable sources, e.g. the CITES list or other credible sources, it's hard to conclude a species or variant is endangered. If you do find a credible authority that publicly claims any species of Tropheus is officially endangered, I would appreciate knowing. Thanks.

Ilangi are listed on C.A.R.E.S. as CEW (extinct in the wild ) by Ad Konings
-
Thanks for the C.A.R.E.S. reference, Blair. I could only find T. moorii Ilangi (Kasaba Bay) on the At Risk list. I wasn't able to find the CEW list. There are three locations in the Lake that I am aware of where Ilangi have been collected (Kasaba Bay, Nkonde and Nkamba Bay) and there are two variants that collectors have exported, the yellow and the orange varieties. I'm not familiar with the Kasaba Bay variant but I believe the yellow variety comes from Nkamba Bay and is the more highly sought variant, whereas the variant from Nkonde is the orange version. Since these latter two variants are not specifically listed by C.A.R.E.S. or CITES, I am assuming these are not endangered or extinct in the wild.

Guess there's no wild caught group then. Heads up on anyone claiming to have a wild caught group huh...
-
I got wild caught from Old World Exotics less than a year ago.
