Just got an excellent deal on a 125 gallon today! Full setup with an Fx-5 for the canister filter for $300!! I have some cleaning to do but really excited!
-
Sounds awsome whats your stocking plans?
-
Definitely haps and maybe a few peacocks. For sure Red Empresses
-
where u find that at??
-
In Holland, MI! Everything was really dirty, but the tank holds water and the Fx-5 works, so i'm pretty satisfied at this point!
-
Awesome nothing wrong with a BIG tank. I'm working on a 7ft HAP & Peacock tank myself. Any special plans you have for yours?
-
Sweet! I was looking at a 7 foot one recently, but the tank and stand were all one piece, so it was 400 pounds ans just too hard to move. I've come up with a tentative stock list, but we'll see if i change it!
3 Red Empress
5 copadichromis trevawasae
5 otopharynx lithobates
5 aulonocara stuartgranti usisya
Sound good? Could i put more, have less?
-
Where do you plan on getting the copadichromis from? I've been searching for a while
-
My LFS can usually get fish in for me, but if not, i'll try online!
-
I've got copadichromis trewavasae, and I live about 15 minutes from you if not less. All I have are fry right now i believe...
-
Hmm, well i might send you a pm in a month or so! So i posted my stock list, but i'm not sure i like it...anyone have a good stock list for haps and peacocks? I kind of hope to get small groups of each kind and see if i can breed them. Can haps from different genera interbreed?
-
Yes they most definitely can I have a couple all male tanks the trick is to make sure that they don't look alike from what I have found I would say out of one tank I have all but 3 that have colored up mainly because they are big enough yet I just wait and see. There will be some that won't color up because they aren't dominant so I would pick a few that you want and a few others that you would not care to much if they colored fully if you want a show tank. But putting 3 or 4 species together with female they will breed depending on who the dominate male is
-
If attempting to breed I'd highly recommend species only tanks just makes things way easier. That being said I did breed mbuna in a community tank and raised and sold fry. I only pulled females that I watched spawn with same species males. This was easier for me as the tank was in the living room. If a female was holding and I didn't see herspawn iI just let here spit in the tank and fry get gobbled up.
Here is a cool idea though not sure how handy you are and if this will be a show tank or fish room tank. But if you wanted to breed you could divide the tank with some kind of 3d natural looking dividers and put different breeding groups in in one. That way you'd get the look with multiple colored males but your females wouldn't get mixed up. Would be challenging but I think could work.
-
I like djlamonica's idea, but not sure how you'd do it. Maybe Steve would have an idea. He's really good with that stuff ;D
-
That is a prett cool idea but you would have to be careful the species you choose don't get to big because if you cut it into 3 parts you only have about 40 some gallons per say breeding trio
-
Gotcha, that is a pretty good idea! i'll think about it!! I really want to breed something cuz its nice getting a little bit of money back, but maybe some of my other tanks! Can anyone come up with a good stock list? I'm really open for anything, i just want some nice color! I would really like some red empress though and maybe lemon jakes, but they arent necessary.
-
Well maybe you'd do 2 bigger sections and a smaller section for say a dwarf mbuna or smaller hap. I dunno just an idea I don't no how it would work lol.
-
Yeah, it might be easier for just a show tank, anybody have good stock list for a 125?
-
All set up!
-
Tank looks great, are you still looking for a stock list ?
Some advice I got when stocking my tanks, don't mix like colored fish, try to keep as wide a variety of colors as possible to curtail aggression in the tank.
I just started looking through various species listings and picked out the fish I liked the best and then went on a fish hunt.
To me the hunt is what is the fun part of this hobby !
Good luck with your new tank...
-
Thanks! And yup i'm still looking for a list. I've been looking on cichlid-forum.com and finding the fish that look cool to me, so i'll hopefully start buying trios of what I have picked out! I'm just trying to find my limit of how many fish i can get. I'm thinking 20, could i do more or should it be less?
-
I f you go by the 1 inch rule, you could get away with 25 5" fish if doing a show tank...But since you will be breeding fish that changes as they will mark out territories once breeding. so between 15 - 21 depending on how many trios you get. Look up Oyer's on this forum they have a very extensive selection of both Haps and Peacocks. However I heard that they were thinking about moving to Ohio, not sure if that has occurred yet or not..
Good luck !
-
Gotcha, thanks! And yeah i'll probably be doing a few fish that are bigger than 5" so i think 20 is probably my max.
-
the sand with the light colored rock make a good contrast with the black background. whats the background made of?
-
Haha thanks, and its actually just a black trash bag :p
-
i thought so but i just didnt want to sound like a prick if i was wrong. haha. any stock list yet?
-
Haha i gotcha. It might change at some point, but its cheap and it works :p. and right now i just have 3 red empress in there. I might add some peacocks later, but i'm still trying to decide on a total stock list.
-
Well, its been close to a year since I've set up this tank! I decided to make it an all male tank instead of trying to do breeding groups. So far the stock is:
3 Red empress (hopefully getting rid of 2 soon)
Mylochromis Ericotaenia Manda
Otopharynx Lithobates
Lethrinops Mbawa Blackfin
Placidochromis Phenochilus Tanzania
Placidochromis Electra
Ruben Red Peacock
Aulonocara "Red Dragon"
Cyrtocara Moorii (I'm thinking this one might be a female, so it may be replaced too)
Looking to get many more, including:
Aulonocara Lwanda
A. Baenschi/Maleri
German Red peacock
Lemon Jake Peacock
Copadichromis Trewavasae
Protomelas sp. "Steveni Taiwan"
Some species of Synodontis
And maybe some other big cichlids like a Rostratus, or Nimbochromis
Just thought I'd update, pictures to come hopefully soon!
