Title: Old world - Asian - cichlids
Post by: linuxrulesusa on July 29, 2013, 09:08:03 PM
I picked up four orange chromides today.  They were sold as 'red chromides' and the girl didn't know entirely what they were because she told me last week they didn't still have them (and I had seen them at the store several months back - Twins in Southgate).

I was debating chromdies + knight goby (or similar) vs. some native fish, and opted for these brackish cichlids since I only had to 'collect' them from a store instead of getting permits and catching the fish myself...maybe I'll try that down the road a bit.

They seem healthy.  They've been in freshwater so far.

I plan to convert them slowly to brackish...much more slowly than I tried with the figure 8 since that didn't work.  Mostly I want to switch them because I've read the orange variety does not breed in freshwater.  I also hope to end up with a pair.

Here's some pics.

In the bag...

Nice, if you do get them to breed, I would be interested in getting some.

Ok.  If they do have fry I will attempt to grow some out.  :)  First order of business is sexing them.  If by size I may have two males and two females since I think they got to the store at the same time.  But I'll have to watch for a while first.

Got a big and a small one hanging out together so we'll see.  I should probably keep the other two in as dithers or targets since I hear sometimes the pair will break or one kill the other after spawning.

Do you remember if you had to do brackish or just freshwater for them to breed?

No progress yet.  I plan to adjust salinity and try a meatier diet as Dale from Fins said that worked for him
