Ok, so I have a female benga sunshine who appears to be holding (hopefully) and I want my male to try and breed again, so I did a water change and none of the males in the tank appear to even be interested in any of the females. Why is this? If they bred once shouldn't he be working on another female by now?
-
what tank size? how many female benga sunshine do u have? and how many male benga sunshine ?
-
They'll be interested as soon as another female is "ready" so you just have to wait until then.
-
What is in there with them? What are you feeding? What's your water like?
-
mixed haps and a german red male. I'm feeding Omega One super color cichlid pellets, microkrabs, omega one veggie rounds, and ocean nutrition formula two flakes. Water is around 82 degrees, hard, and ph in mid 8s
-
Red flag right there. You more than likely are going to end up with hybrids due to the fact you have another peacock in there. It is nearly impossible to tell the difference in peacock females. What haps do you have in there with it? If your tank is too crowded other fish will interrupt spawning. Try feeding meaty foods once or twice a week. Lately Ive been throwing mosquito larvae in to fish at the store and have been getting a lot of fish spawning.
-
I know, I think I already have a crossbreed but they won't be sold. Where have you been getting mosquito larvae? It's a grow out tank for my haps until I get a 90 gallon. I have a star sapphire a red empress, blue dolphin, eb hap ahli
-
Standing water in our pond plants outside. I also have a bucket with daphnia growing in it I will feed to fry.
-
Oh ok. I might just have to try that. Daphnia always seems like a lot of work to me so I've always used brine shrimp
-
hap ahli will also gladly breed your benga female... :(
-
I think brine shrimp and spirulina brine help too. Couple that with a cool water change on the same day and you'll be looking for more fry tanks soon.
-
Looks like I'll have lots of weird hybrids. I'll still raise a couple out of curiosity but the rest will be sold as hybrids; if at all

PLEASE don't sell the hybrid as there are all ready to many out there.
-
Hybrids need to culled or used as feeders. Don't put anymore out in the hobby.
-
Lol yeah dude I get you work at a store and all but be smart. I know its easier to make a quick buck and all but keep the hobby going. I don't sell stuff here that's a hybrid unless its a man made one but still I let people know what they are.
-
I'm not saying that I would be selling them. I said if at all. meaning that I most likely wont be.
-

Reread that statement
-
That's not how I meant it. I meant that if I decided to sell them (which I'm not) they would be labeled as hybrids not as pure breds. After hearing all this, I understand why you guys are against them.
-
So now that someone mentioned the word hybrids and got off on a tangent, what was your question again? Oh yea how do you get the male to start breeding again? It'll take some time for the next female to get ready but i noticed a little more protein in there diet helps speed things up a bit. If you want to raise your hybrids to see what they will look like go for it, don't cull them because someone thinks hybrids are evil. You enjoy your hobby how ever it makes you happy.
-
pretty sure he was talking about selling them... only reason it was derailed.
-
I would like to know why all the bigotry against hybreds? Nature creates all kinds of them, and some are most beautiful in fact we are hybreds, It has been geneticaly proven that for the majority we all have some neanderthal blood in our veins, and their genetics give us the immunity we need as a species to survive. Show a little more understanding and allow nature to do what she has done best for millions of years
-
Eventually all these threads turn into an argument over whether hybrids are good or bad and both sides chime in.
To answer the actual question, it'll be the females that will determine when the next breeding will take place as it all depends on when they're ready to spawn. Some people say that a slightly colder temperature water change can trigger spawning too. I've found stress, more the removal of stress to be the best precursor to spawning.
-
Thanks guys. I shouldn't have even mentioned the word hybrid. evertime it's mentioned on here someone has something to say about it

If your purpose in a hobby is to make a living off of it as a full time job it is a very poor. Creating and selling hybrids shows you literally have no care or passion of the hobby other then to make money let alone being part of keeping the hoby alive and going.

^ I agree
-
Yeah. get rid of all us hybreds. Lets do away with nature while we are at it so there will be no more diversity.we can't have any evolution going on here.

nature's evolution & playing God with a fish tank are two different things. Don't get it twisted.
-
Yeah dude you're not evolving anything when trying to Frankenstein a fish. Lets leave up to the Chinese to engineer new fish not someone who lacks common sense and throws a bunch of fish in a tank. Not taking a stab at anyone just making a statemnet.. if you cannot figure it out by now hybrids in the hobby are frowned upon if you look into all the problems they are having in the lakes in africa you might be able to do the math and figure out why people want to keep pure species in the hobby.
-
It is the same. it doesn't matter if they are in a lake or in a tank, nature decieds if they will mate and what becomes of them. MAN will deciede to keep the bloodlines pure. I do think some should remain pure but killing hybreds just because they are is stupid and it is playing god, who knows what beautiful breed might someday come from them. Nature has made EVERY type of life on this planet from hybreds, nothing is like its first ancestor was. When I think of ridgidpurity of the species the first thing that comes to mind is Hitler and the KKK. I know this is fish but they have a right to live and evolve.
-
I have something long typed up but forget about it. Good luck playing darwin.
-
Sorry, I just read through this and have to chime in. When "MAN" decides to put different species of fish in a TANK and they spawn creating a hybrid... That is not NATURE. But when a fish is caught in a remote lake and is scientifically identified as a "hybrid of nature" that is a different story all together... Just my thoughts on it. ??? ???

This is wrong is so many ways.....As soon as you take the fish out of the lake and into a tank, it's no longer natural (nature), the instincts of the fish (nature) will drive them to mate, but they will need to un-naturally go against their instinct to choose a mate of their species since a suitable mate is not available. In this situation the more primitive instinct to mate must override the more recently evolved instinct to select a mate of their species. Nature has most definitely not made every type of life on this planet from hybrids, very very very few species are a result of hybridization. Most species are a result of geographical isolation, sexual selection (genetically based preference for some specific quality in the opposite sex), genetic drift, and/or similar selective pressure. Hitler wasn't looking for rigid purity, he was interested in selective breeding of humans for certain qualities similar to what we do with livestock/dogs/cats, and he had a deep hatred for jews...those two things aren't connected in the way your thinking. The "playing god" argument is not great, it has been used for almost everything: using medicine/surgery, birth control, spaying/neutering your pets, breeding livestock, killing a bug, telling your kids what to do or not do, etc.
Sorry to go off like this, but opinion and false information are different things. I'm fine with opinions, some of them are wrong :) , but people are entitled to them. Putting forth false information as truth is unacceptable.

I will disagree with a few things. First Hitler wanted RACIAL purity of the Germanic peoples or Arian peoples. Next nature has hybredized every living thing on this planet from different species, check with genetic samples and DNA and you will find many examples of this. Do you think humans always looked like we do? how about horses, cattle, dogs, cats, ect. You need to find the facts before you start spewing misinformation. Next fish won't mix unless they have to, Please explain the Tiger Muskie along with all the so called sub species of fish in all the worlds waters all were at one time one of your Hybreds. I think some of you need to have a talk with a biologist then come back and we can talk. As for taking them from nature and putting them in tanks the lakes they live in are just very large tanks, and if you don't think they will cross breed in the wild once again talk to a biologist.
-
I talk to bill nye all the time. Ps tiger muskies were man made hybrids...
-
I am newer to fish breeding and have fallen in love with Cichlids.
Your signature says it all.... but why would you want to destroy what you've "fallen in love with" ?
Just one of those people who think you can do better than nature?

I'll be having the last word here. Generally speaking, we allow civil discussion and some passionate disagreements, this is wandering off into rants and name calling.
If it's your prerogative to create hybrids, knock yourself out. Just don't expect to not get grief here when you're going against what most of what this club stands for. There are a number of species that are near extinction or extremely difficult to get due to warlords, lack of a functioning government, etc. so it's really not good for the hobby in general to have hybrids floating around of species that you cant necessarily identify just by looking at them (especially when they're juveniles).
A perfect example of this the "midevil." Good luck finding a pure strain Red Devil or Midas cichlid. Just about every one in your lfs are hybrids.
