Title: water changers
Post by: techjoe on June 21, 2013, 09:20:06 PM
I used a python water changer for years and it broke.  So then I bought an aqueon water changer that lasted3 weeks before splitting.  I glued it 3 times once with 5 minute epoxy and twice with JB wield.  The epoxy lasted longest.  My question is what do you all use and has anyone any information on an indestructible water changer?   I was thinking I maybe able to build a valve out of plumbing parts or something.

My Aqueon has been good for the past 8 months now no issues. Perhaps you just got a hold of a defective one? If its only been 3 weeks then I would get a hold of the shop you bought it and tell them and see what they say.

I have had the best luck with the old "crappy" thin acrylic siphons that are glued together and have a hose stuck on them.  I have been recently trying to buy some new ones and it seem like everyone is trying to redesign the wheel and make sophisticated siphons that either don't stay in one piece, or just plain suck.  I just bought one in a LFS in Hastings that seems to be simple and useful, but don't remember a brand.  I am also interested in what others have had luck with

I had the same problem with the aqueon one...I gave up on it...I still use the siphon part and the hose to vacuum out stuff but use a 55 drum and an old pump to put water back in.

I had the new one a week longer then the two week return policy at the local petsmart.  I sent an e-mail to the company and was told they would send  a new one but that was two weeks ago now and i can't hold my breath any more.   I found this photo and this link I think I may try building something.  http://flexpvc.com/cart/agora.cgi?cart_id=9783.2906*8n7dz2&product=PVC-Venturi-Tees

That seems like it would be pretty easy to do and wouldn't need rocket appliances to get it done.

I use a mag 7 pump hooked up to a garden hose to drain, and I have a 3 tank re-filler that hooks up to a garden hose and i can fill 3 tanks at once and control the water flow on each one

What is your system for filling 3  tanks?  Do you have a reservoir?  Or is it off a faucet?

3 month's ago aqueon said they were going to send me a replacement.  I glued the old one together again and that patch has lasted this long.  Yet no new valve has arrived kinda irritated.   Not sure what action to take next.  I would like to share the e mails between us but they have a disclaimer attached saying that would be illegal.

Have you contacted them again to let them know it has not arrived?

Yeah just sent an email.   Fingers crossed.   In the meantime I have to re glue this one I was just in the beginning of changing water on my 150.  May have to put it off till Sunday.  That is the next time I have any spare time.

Since you posted this originally back in June and I replied mine was fine back then, mine has since that time broke as well. Not a crack in the same spot as yours, but mine cracked at the back of the vertical tube where the seam is at >:( I didn't bother with contacting them though, I just went on ebay and plunked down $10 for a new one rather than wait for a replacement. The replacement one does seem a bit more heavy duty than the original one at least so maybe it will last longer than 10 months this time.

I had the same problem with my python T breaking.  The part that connects to the faucet cracked.  I fixed the problem I bought a brass end cap that is thread.  Then I drilled the same size hole as the old broken plastic connector had.  This has worked great.  I have used my replacement for over a year.
