I am moving away from the tropheus tank and gearing up more towards a Hap, peacock, Africa tank.
Now if I could get who ever has a dream Hap or Peacock they have wanted or their favorite type and just post what their favorite is I am going to try and make a 75 gallon MCA suggested Hap, peacock tank. This probably has been done before but hey maybe peoples minds have changed. Laslty, if I could get everyone who suggest to only post one or two fish so that everyone has a chance to post a fish they like. I know we have more the 15-20 members so if i get more then 15 to 20 types then I will make a poll to see what stays and to see what goes. i hope this works and i am very excited to see what people have to say. Happy picking! :D
UPDATE:
Everything is going well. The tank is sealed (not the prettiest) I am testing it tonight to make sure. I may have jumped the gun a little but i just got a Ngara flame tail and red empress they are in my 10 gallon for the time being. The question I have is what filtration should i use? I have a FLUVAL 304 and a FLUVAL 204 and an AC 20 or 30 all availible should I sell the FLUVALs or trade? or keep what I have also on the tank I am creating a 3-d background as well(which I am excited for) but please help with the filter situation ill take any advice or help

Electric blue, ruby green haps

Taiwan Reef
Lemon Jake
Careful of the Ruby Greens (Victorians)... maybe just me... but I gave up with them in my peacock tank. Too aggressive.

Nothing compares to a full grown C. Moorii.

Hmmm, lots of peacocks I like. The Baenschi and Lemon Jake have already been mentioned. I also love the Lawanda & Flavescent. I recommend an Ngara Flametail.

How do you vote in this contest?
Voting won't happen until I get all suggestions so once the suggestions stop I will make a poll. And so far I love every one of them keep them coming MCA! ;D

That looks more like a Ruby Red to me.

Ok then a real RED Ruby Red ! When did you become a fish expert :o !

That looks more like a Ruby Red to me.
Some quick googling (I know nothing about peacocks) indicates that ruby reds have more blue spots/spangles throughout the body and their faces are not as blue. Whereas German Reds have more solid blue faces and more solid red bodies.
That said, I think it's somewhat a personal preference or marketing decision as to what you call it, since to the best of my knowledge no one knows for sure if German Reds are line breds or hybrids or whatever. Regardless, they are pretty fish and I don't really care their origin from an aesthetic perspective. Especially in an all male show tank (which I assume this is), the breeding question is moot.

From a peacock stand point, I would have to say a bi-color 500. Also a nice pundimilia nyereri mwanza gulf would look nice in there.

I wonder where he could find one? ;)

Not my photos, but I like
Protomelas taeniolatus "red empress"

That WAS mine. I sold him last fall when I dismantled my all male tank. Don't remember who got him. He was a stunner though. I regret tearing that down. Thinking about doing an all male Peacock tank with a 60G I have sitting empty. Lol.

I wonder where he could find one? ;)
It is not that all. I think a vic goes nice with an all male tank. Can even be a Flameback for that matter. Vics are no more aggressive than any other type of cichlid I have kept.
-
:) Thank you everyone who has put input down, I am very excited so far I almost know i have more then enough right here to where I could have a tank. But I want some more input! I will create the poll sooner then later it seems because i have so many fish already. I will close the suggestions tomorrow. Happy picking! (if you haven't already)

I was just ribbing you. Good to hear they are just normal aggression wise. That was my take in the brief time I kept the sp35s.

Any last entries? For the MCA Tank?
-
Poll is posted

Baenschi - would be my other choice...

Strange that I am the only one with aggression troubles with the Victorians in my peacock tank?

I have heard that from others too I used to have hap thickskins sp44 and the dominant male ran the other but that was only cospecific he rarely did anything to any of the other fish including a pike cichlid orange peacock and silver dollars (it twas a unusual setup) hahaha
-
I tried a few times and had to take them out.
They are now thriving in my Mbuna mixed tank.
-
Yeah if the Vic's win in the voting I will be watching the tank to make sure because I have heard the same thing your saying. I just wish I had a few more voters so I could have definite winners there is only two right now that's the Taiwan reef and the Ngara flametail.

You seem to have forgotten D. Compressiceps in your poll.

Added thank you for the addition, I was wondering if those would be too large for a 75 gallon though?

Also could I make it an Albino D. Compressiceps or no you like the regular one more?

IMO, the Silver is the best looking.
-
The tank is too small for a D. compressiceps long term. I'd stick with smaller haps and peacocks.
I voted "other" with a selection - a male P. electra is my recommendation.

I just looked up the electra... never really looked into them. But, they are kind of nice looking. And it sounds like they might be a perfect tank mate to our Albus.

I tried but it wont let me

Strange that I am the only one with aggression troubles with the Victorians in my peacock tank?
What kind of Vic do you have? Some can be aggressive, but mine show most aggression at breeding time like any other Cichlid.

Having both could be the issue, although your tank is big enough so you wouldn't think so. Try to move one and see if the other calms down. Just my opinion.

No, these were the two kinds that I tried to keep with our Peacocks in an 85 gallon with a lot of coverage to hide. They became VERY dominant in the tank and caused everyone else to hide in fear.

I found i like it might be my shoe in which is the otter point is it a variant that is already posted or am i right in saying that it is a different fish? because i have seen its said to be a lemon jake but when i look them up it shows different fish so i take it that it is a sp. of the jacobfreibergi genus so he is my pick (so he is a shoe in) But keep the votes coming in I know alot of people have voted already but there are some close battles right now so there will only be a few losers so make sure to keep the one you want to make it( campaign for your fish hahaha :P )
-
There are two types of jacobfreibergi. Otter point and lemon jacobfreibergi (lemon jakes). The lemon jake has more yellow where as the otter point has more orange.
-
why not have both :P Also Vote for Taiwan Reef! :)

I am far from an expert on this... but this is just my experience while shopping for these... please correct me if my understanding is wrong.
I have seen another one... at least labeled. Just a plain jacobfreibergi... or maybe it had red or orange in the description also.
Lemon Jakes (blue and yellow) dont seem to look anything like otter points (multiple colors with more white on the fins and some yellow and orange).
And, I havent seen the word jacobfreibergi used in the descriptiohn of Lemon Jakes... but you know how some fish stores are. Never thought to question where the "jake" in Lemon Jake came from.
I have... I think... in my tank and otter point jacobfreibergi... a red jacobfreibergi and I have also had a Lemon Jake. And all looked considerably different.
Just my random thoughts on this subject as I had a discussion with someone else on this as what they said was an otter point didnt look like what I though was an otter point.

A. jacobfreibergi is the species name. It has multiple collection locations, most isolated from one another and those location variants produce the different colorations that receive particular names. Otter Point as mentioned has a unique look. The "Lemon Jake" is relevant to more than a single location IIRC, but they are unique as well.
Within the hobby they are treated as separate species to help preserve the uniqueness of the collection locations. If you know what they are, you wouldn't want to mix males and females of different location within the same tank.
If they are just labeled "A. jacobfreibergi", you can guess what collection location based on their look, but short of breeding a few generations with others of the suspected collection location, it's not realistic to declare them a particular type, as you may risk misrepresenting what you have IMO.

This MCA tank will be a show tank so there will not be any breeding going on as of now. VOTE for the mloto likoma! :)
-
Bump Update in the first post. If I should post update here let me know I am new to this updating thing :P
-
New poll! if you dont see it it didn't make the cut or i already have one.
-
Last hour make sure you VOTE ;D
-
Thank you everyone for helping with the tank! I will be posting pics of the in a new thread in a tank setups thread. I really enjoyed doing this and cant wait to show the fish off! Thanks MCA

Im so sorry for no updates on this tank I have had some crazy opportunities come up in the past 2 weeks. I will be temporarily be moving down to Huntsville AL until the end of summer and wont be giving any updates on the tank after this sunday but it is up and running.
I'm sorry i veered from the original selection I am still planning on getting some of those fish when I take out the females and get back from AL (dont worry i am paying someone to take care of my tanks when I'm gone i have a whole HASP set up for the care taker lol)
The stock list so far (will change in the future due to females)
2 Aulonocara ethelwynnae (1 male, getting rid of female pm if interested)
1 Aulonocara German red (male)
1 Fireline Hap Mloto (male) (idk the scientific name because the guy at the store said it wasn't a likoma but thats all i have found when i look up fireline hap mloto)
1 Pundamilia Nyererei (male)
1 Flameback haplochromis (male)
1 Paralabidochromis chromogynos piebald (male)
1 Otopharynx lithobates red top(male)
1 Golden Peacock (getting rid of female pm if interested)
1 Strawberry Peacock (male) (has yet to go into tank he is much too large right now.)
the fish are eating like champs and the the red top, ethelwynnae, and nyererei is coloring up really well already, followed by the german red, flameback, and chromogynos, and lastly the fireline but he is the newest to the tank.

Just knowing that your there "lurking " in the weeds makes me feel so much better !

I love the idea of taking a survey for peacocks and haps. This will give me ideas as to what I put in my tank. ;)
