Title: Separating the FS
Post by: djlamonica on May 05, 2013, 08:16:27 PM
Been browsing some other clubs forums and noticed that a lot of them have separate sections in there fs threads some go as far as separating lakes and regions but I think new world cichlid old world cichlids dry goods plecos/catfish and other would be a good start.

It does make it more complicated for sellers who have more thsn one kind of thing.  But would be more organized hopefully.

Chicago had a separate section for mixed lots.

It's not really necessary.  If you look at the forum right now, there are still threads up from Friday.  We don't have the traffic on this site yet to where threads get buried in less than a day.

How about you start making it to some meetings before suggesting anything.  :P

Now being serious....  I agree with Marty.  If the OP lists the species in the title,  Which most do, then it's not needed.

Way to far for me on a Friday night would never make it even if I got off earlier then normal.

Yeah I know that you would attend if possible.  That's why I took the opportunity to bust your balls .

I agree.

If it were divided... it would just be more clicks I have to push on my phone.

Ha!  I didn't even think of that.... Dan must've gotten a new job with a phone company & is trying to get us to use more data. :P

Yeah your right I defiantly underestimated the amount of work clicking an extra time would cause my fault I need to consider such things next time. I mean were talking seconds imagine the other things we could be doing with that precious time!  I sincerely apologize.

I actually like this idea. But I also used to spend hours at a time renaming my music files so that they would all fit the same format.

it's OK, you just didn't realize that one could feed their fish 3.14 pellets in that amount of time.

I'd definitely agree with you if the member base was 1,500+

It's not really for over crowding of the for sale section it would be more for people that aren't every day visitors like the people discussing this, but for the people that are once a week or a couple times a month there on the forums.  Also would be cool for people like me who really one click on the "show unread posts since last visit" and don't actually go through and browse.  Not to mention would be cool for something like hey I'd like to try something new like on old world go through the list of fish from a few months back a lot of that stuff is still for sale because A. people are breeding the species and B. stuff doesn't sell and the seller doesn't bump it all the time.

No biggie just thought it was something cool that some of the other clubs had.

Its not really a time thing for me.  But, when there are only one page of for sale adds... why go look multiple places when it can all be seen at one time?

Now, if adds fell off the first page each day or so... then I could see breaking them up and make it easier to find what you are looking for.

Maybe some day there will be that much traffic.

This was of course a joke.  If you read the my above post I explain it's not for over crowding of the FS or anything to do with things falling off the first page.

I know were not doing this but this is what I was getting at.

The fish are listed individually with pictures and a short description.  It would be a lot of work but I just really like going through a site like that instead of lists of fish and tanks and supplies.  That is a much larger club what works for them might not work for us. Oh well just an idea can lock now.

I don't think that is necessary right now. Maybe in the future.

I am sure most would disagree with me, but I think the 'For Sale' should not allow replies.  If you interested PM the seller. Still haven't figured out the need to reply with 'PM Sent' as a reply.  If some sends me a PM, i receive an email or I see it first thing when I visit MCA. My two cents.

that must be in case the OP is subscribed to the thread, but doesn't get PM notification.

This has happened to me on several occasions, either got the PM much later or didn't get notified.  Not a big deal nor a major complaint, just an observation.  Pros/cons to the various approaches though.

I know some people (including me in the past) have had trouble getting emails about PMs.

Dan, what your suggesting is not just creating additional sections on the forum but creating an interactive website that allows members to post.  I personally like the simplistic nature of forum with only one section.  But what you suggest does have some HUGE merits.  The biggest benefit is Google loves those types of sites.  The club would benefit with countless additional traffic when someone searches "labidochromis caeruleus for sale" and MCA comes up as a first page search result because someone has it posted in our for sale section.  I for one will support the idea completely.  I will be your advocate with the Board of Directors.  This can't and won't fall back onto any of the existing core volunteers as we are all maxed out so what do you need from the MCA to get this implemented?

Unfortunately I don't poses the skills or ability to implement some thing of that nature.  My original suggestion would just to add categories in the for sale. Ie. Dry goods, new worlds, old worlds, and other.  Posting the web site was just saying that's where I got the idea and really enjoyed going through that site.  As I know the amount of work some thing like that would take and cost.

I also understand that the board members and volunteers are maxed out and couldn't possibly do more.   My original suggestion was for something simple that web admin could implement.  But other members did not like the idea.

So case in point I didn't mean it like "hey why can't we have this". More of this is awesome lol.
