Picked up as much as I could carry in one trip after finding these falling into the road while I was in North Dakota recently (12oz bottle for size reference).

I love how large, yet thin they are - lots of surface area for minimal wasted tank volume and added weight! Similar to slate, but they are lighter and easier to move. I'm hoping they hold up long term. I'm pretty sure they are sandstone.

Will let us know if something goes wrong. I'd start with a goldfish or two to start. And watch the ph !!

I used something very similar for a long time with no problems. They began as sandstone rocks about 1-2 feet in diameter and 6-8 inches thick but had splits all through them and I could easily split them down to 1-2 inch thick slabs with a stone hammer.
They just let off fine trails of bubbles for a day or two after first putting them in the tank.

Will do! Not sure when I'll get around to putting them in. Hopefully sometime soon!

Thanks for the advice. When you say "stone hammer", do you mean a 3lb sledge with a point? I did consider that I might be able to split them further if needed with a 3lb hammer and a cold chisel.=

Thanks! ... I could have used a bomber instead but it might make them look smaller... :-X

yep, just a regular sized hammer with the flat chisel like end and a square end. A hammer and chisel would have worked too.

Seriously, the pics I see have no bottle in them. Maybe my laptop only shows a partial pic....I am using a Netbook.

It's on the right hand side of the photos, so if the image isn't scaled down to fit I can see it not showing up entirely.

I thought maybe the issue was that he emptied too many bottles himself and couldn't see one more :D ;)
