Title: Hello
Post by: Jamie on March 07, 2013, 09:35:02 AM
Hello from Grand Rapids. I'm Jamie; 34-year-old mom to a young Great Dane, an aging Border Collie, two spoiled housecats, a slew of swimming critters and one really amazing 8-year-old female human :)
I have been keeping tropical fish for right around a decade.  I have always approached the hobby from an aquatic gardening angle, with the fish just accenting the plantlife and completing the necessary  biological cycles.  Naturally, fish that don't destroy my plants have been my focus.  However, I am about to step into the world of African cichlids for the first time.  I've had the tank set up an cycled for a very long time, waiting to get my hands on the species I finally decided is right for me.  I've gotten used to seeing rock, rather than plant life in there and I really expect to enjoy my new adventure in fish keeping!
I've done a ton of research, but I will still almost certainly be coming here looking for answers to questions I didn't know I had!  I'm really glad to have found this forum and I look forward to getting to know the people here!
-Jamie

Hello Jamie, welcome.

Most cichlids I have kept, are plant eaters.

I have had the best luck keeping them with anubias nana. They seem to find the species less tasty I think. ")

I also do not feed any type of flake, or leafy greens, as to not 'teach them', to eat plants.

I may have been unclear.  I dont intend to attempt to garden in the cichlid tank, as i realize it would likely end badly.  This is a major reason i never got into cichlids before.  I have plenty of plants growing nicely these days, though,  so I guess I'm ready to expand into new areas; put a little color into it  :)
There IS a single anubias nana in there, Attached to a rock, but that is all.  With a little luck, it will survive!
