Title: True White Knight leucistic hap ahli (fryeri)
Post by: sniceley on February 27, 2013, 10:36:36 PM
I recently moved to Michigan with my breeding colony (1.5) of true white knight hap ahlis. I am starting to raise fry again and I am wondering what a fair price is for them. I will probably sell them at about 1.5 inches or so. Please be honest. If you can give me pet shop prices and hobbyist prices that would be great. Once I can offer some fry up for sale again I will post it here.

Offhand I'm not sure on pricing, but I'm curious what the difference is between a "True White Knight" and a "non-True White Knight"?

My impression for years is that it was developed via cross-breeding originally and there's is not a true white S. fryeri version, just a hybrid.  ???

We're talking leucistic?  Not albino?  Dark eyes?

Here is a very crappy pic of my male from my phone with lights off in the room and the tank.  He is a bit skittish so it will take some effort to get a good pic up close.  White Knights are not a hybrid.  They are a leucistic form of S. fryeri which first popped up in Australia through captive breeding efforts.  I don't know if they exist in the wild, but the gene came from the wild so it is likely that they do, but probably very rarely.  As you can see they do not have any pigmented color in their body or fins, blue not a pigment in fish it is a reflective protein.  Eye color not affected because it is from another set of genes.

All fry look exactly like the parents, with the same distinctive body shape and proportions of typical S. fryeri.  I haven't tried to outcross them with wild type or albino forms to this point.  When I do so I will post my results.  If the genetics work the same as other species I have worked with I should be able to get a fish recessive for both genes, or a red eyed white knight.

It appears that the two types, albino and leucistic, have been confused for some time now on the web.  The first white knights popped up a few years back but very sporadically.  I picked up a group of 10 fry under an inch in length along with a few other breeder colonies of peacocks and haps.  Got rid of all the others when I moved but I couldn't bring myself to give up the white knights, just too different from everything else that I see out there and apparently nearly impossible to get again.  I work at a shop that has been trying to get them in for a couple of years now, but every time they come in as albinos.

I would probably be interested in ones WITHOUT red eyes, if the timing & price is right.

A couple people up here have offered these to us at the store a long with ob red empress. They offer any where from 7 bucks for little ones and 15 bucks for ones that are in the 2-3 inch range. I know one guy selling some fry of these for 2-3 bucks a fish at maybe a little bigger than a inch right now.

Thanks for the explanation.  :)

Have my colony up for sale now. PM if interested. Haven't been stripping fry for a year or more now and I just don't have the time with a lot of other commitments on my plate at the moment. They produce a ton if you want them to, it is all about how many you want to produce.

i aswell have a breeding colony of these.. will be breeding them once i get some water clarity issues figured out and know that its safe to set my tanks up in the new house =/  until then i won't have any of my breeder tanks set up as i don't want to kill off this rare species

came across them in lansing and could not pass up the beautiful male and 5 of his lady friends...
