Title: Tank busting fish
Post by: four_by_ken on February 27, 2013, 10:35:49 AM
Anyone ever had a fish bust a tank?

My brother used to have a real large Oscar that I thought had a chance, but never did.  You could hear him hitting the tank when he saw you and he was hungry.

If a fish had a chance of breaking a tank, I'd be scared to have one in the house with a 3 & 4 year old. They are prone to bashing things against tanks and flatscreens which results in a LONG time out. Maybe if the fish knocks over a badly stacked pile of large rocks, but otherwise I probably don't see it happening.

No.. but

I had a 20" silver arowana and easily popped off tanks lids - which I tied down! - they're true to their 'monkey fish' name and presently I have meaty 12" red devil that slams into the glass when you approach the tank, sometimes I think about him busting the tank.

I had a 16" Megalancistrus sp that broke a 50BR....cracked the tank. It would go after your hand and draw blood if you weren't careful. It would kill and eat cichlids it's size or bigger before I owned it....I always kept it alone.

i had a red tail cat that cracked the tank while we were on vacation. came home the 135 had about 60 gallons left in it. he was chasing something. just on a side note i was out if town when the power went out a few years ago simply known as the blackout, the day i returned home my wife and son had been there the whole time. i went to check on the fish and i see my beautiful red orange pike in the red tails mouth. i have been keeping african cichlids ever since. i actually gave him to one of my students at that time.

Ugghh!!! That stinks. I also lost some valuable stock to the "blackout"...3 or 4 wild zebra plecos and a brand new wild pair of a new (at that time) type of Black Calvus.

I used to care for a 3' redtail... no doubt they have some power behind them.

It was a blast to feed.  In the tank with it was a 3' Arrowana, a huge Pacu and a few alligator gars that were 28"+.
