Title: Went to the auction today
Post by: Patrick on February 16, 2013, 04:41:56 PM
Had a great time at the auction today.  Met Marty, and bought an Amazon Sword, some Java Fern, Dwarf Vall, and some Trumpet snails.

I plan to sell all my large Festivums at the next auction.

Everything is floating. LOL

This is actually partly my tank as well (I live in the same household as the original poster). What part is floating...? Granted I have minimal experience with plants. If you mean the java moss I have it tied down via anchor or rubber bands depending on where it's at.

The plants add a nice touch!

I was at the auction, too, and got a bit carried away!  My purchases:  3 Apistogramma Borelli, 4 Kribs, 13 red cardinal tetras (should have been 14, but one died in the bag at the auction), and 5 bronze Cories.  I also got a Java Fern, Anubias Nana, some Hygrophila Polysperma, and an Italian Val.  So much for sticking to my budget!

2-29g tanks

I stuck to my goal of staying with in $120 dollars :'(

I picked up

A 5 gallon tank
A 10 gallon Tank
Some inserts for a magnum filter
A pond/aquarium filter
A pump for the above filter
2 small Dovi
2 small Venusta

It was either nothing I wanted or nothing that was "priced" right

Since I am in the middle of a re-arrangement of tanks and upgrading, it was best I didn't buy a lot of fish, Plus I was sticking to my goal ;D

Had a blast hanging With Pete and Blair, many of laughs

I picked up 10 Cherry Red Zebras from Mike Z--thank you again!

From the auction I got a trio of Buffalo Heads and my daughters picked up some dwarf crayfish and won some guppies and apisto's from Fantastic Fin's kids raffle. Good time over-all!

I would have loved to have gone,  but with one in college and the other two in H.S. and a graduation upcoming.  I thought it best that I stay away.  I'm not very good at just window shopping.   I really need to get the wife into this hobby, too many dirty looks lately ! Glad to hear that everyone had a good time.  I am looking forward to going on that fish tour though. I'm not missing that event....Yeah yeah w/ cold beer as well...

My Angelfish tank is on the main floor of my house, and has a slight algae problem.  I got 15 of them for $2.00.  Hopefully they help out.

Rob, You're welcome.  Hope they do well.
For the very first time, I bought only 1 bag, but passed that on to the other bidder.  Need to clear out more fish and equipment in advance of having electrical work done and building a rack of 10's & 20's for fry.

I bought a hotdog + bottled water

Although I did come home with some fish from a prearranged purchase, and a filter Steve gave to me

Definitely a good time hanging out with Rich & Pete.

Patrick,  I was the one sitting there with Marty when you 2 were talking.  What a ride Prime Minister we have for not introducing us, Lol.

I bought a 15gal, 3 Linni which I swear are Polystigma & a bag of Malawi Trout.

Mike,  did you sell your infamous Cherry Red Zebra? ;)

Linni and Polystigma do look very similar when young. Once a bit older the head shape of the linni will be noticeably more slender.

Nice pickups BTW!

Thanks!  It helped that I was broke & had to be very selective with my bidding.  I'm actually surprised that I won the Champs.

Thanks for easing my mind on which Nimbo I have. I really don't care which one it is. I just have to know which it is for when I add to the group. (Unless I have a trio)
The same seller had a bag of Venustus labeled as Polys & that's what sparked my paranoia twards my bag.

If I had known there would be champs there, you might have paid more, LOL. I'm disappointed I didn't go because the selection sounds better than I would have anticipated given it was an all species auction.

Yeah, it sounds a little sketchy perhaps, but it should be obvious once they are 3"+ if not sooner. I've got about a dozen N. linni myself. 1 male that's close to 6" from the first batch I bought (of which nearly every fish was a male) and a group of juvies around 2"-2.75" Interestingly, polystigma is the only Nimbochromis I have yet to keep (technically I also have yet to keep a female N. fusco - hard to find them  :( ).

If it makes you feel better, it was significantly down in terms of quantity of fish from the one back in December.  Though sounds like the species available were a bit different.

Fish Doctors in Yipsi has a female Fusco in their mumbo jumbo tank. It's about 3". I almost bought it,  but didn't because of the Linni.

ALgae blooms are typically fro too high Nitrates and Phophates. Try Larger or more frequent water changes. As well as Syphoning the substrate often to keep detritus buildup in the substrate down. Or get some "De-nitrate" and Phophate removing media. Goes right in a Filter with ease. can use a media bag or whatever...

Is the Michigan Cichlid auction smaller in terms of attendance compared to the Motor City auction?  I am assuming yes......

I thought they were yours, but wasn't sure.

Yes, I'd say so. Motor City is an all species club. So you have all types of fish keepers & then you have the dry goods. I think there's some that come out just for that.
