Is there anyone around who will cut a 3/8's piece of glass? I have 2 large pieces of glass that I want to cut to make into glass tops for my 55 tank. ACE Hardware cuts glass @ $1 a cut but only 1/8 thick. I stopped by a couple of Auto Glass shops and they charge $30 per cut - OUCH ! I even stopped by a home window glass shop and they charged $15 a cut.
I contacted Great Lakes and they only cut their own glass, for the sizes I needed it was only a total of $15 - very good price and I may just end up doing that. But the DYI'r in me is still looking for someone who will cut 3/8 glass cheaply.
ANY "SUGESSESTIONS" ??? :D :D :D

Straight cuts are pretty easy... just buy the glass cutter tool and do it yourself.

I must say that I never cut that thick. But, I did cut a lot of different kinds when I did some stained glass stuff a long long time ago.
I never measured how thick the glass was.

I tried to do it myself on a 1/8 inch thick piece of glass and was "Unsucessful" ...Figured I leave that to the experts.
I scored the glass fine, the issue came when I tried to snap off the section of glass not needed. It did not break on the scored line. Now I have glass that would be perfect for stained glass but it is not stained.
Oh the trials of DIY projects...

So if you tried and are now looking to purchase the service, it's no longer DIY.
For all the time being spent trying to find someone to do it cheaply, just go with the $15 deal IMO.

True words of wisdom ! But my better half keeps asking me "what are you going to do with the Glass" ...
As it is, it is leaning up against the wall waiting until I find something to use it for...
As I stated in my post, I am probably going to just get it from Great Lakes and be done with it...

Greatlakes cut my tops for me. I got the sliding kind. Really like them.
Price was real good to me. $46 or $56 or something like that. I had to have them custom cut. The openings on my tank are a strange size.

The front pane slides over the rear pane.
My 140 gallon has three sections that are like this. It has two dividers/braces.

I visited the Great Lakes site and saw the Slider tops, my question relates to how they would fit on top of the 55 with the divider? You would need (2) of them side by side or do thay make it a single slider that fits over the entire top of the 55?

Two of them. My 140 has three of them. They fit in the "channels" just like the folding tops do.
