Well work is finally progressing on my fishroom!
Done:
Electrical essentially done
Wall framed / insulated / drywalled / painted
Duct work wrapped w/ insulation
Insulated between joists
Ceiling grid / ceiling tiles installed
Laundry tub sink installed
Sump w/ sewage grinder pump installed
Hot & Cold Water lines to fishroom filters installed
Work place counter, base cabinet and wall cabinet installed
Furring strip around perimeter of room installed (for air PVC and water supply lines)
Room lights installed
1st coat of floor paint complete
Closed loop PVC for air supply installed
1/2 of 2" waste water drain line installed
Furnace & humidifier drain lines re-routed
Still to do before I even think about tanks, stands, etc:
Install fishroom water supply filters
Install 2 water supply lines around perimeter of room
Finish waste water drain lines
Install door / trim around door / paint
2nd coat of paint on floor
Install room heater
I have not been keeping track of how much this is costing. Thankfully. If I realized how much I've blown on this room already and there isn't a single tank in it yet I might not be very happy with myself.

Sounds awesome. Do you have any pics of the progress you can share?

Thanks.
Ankle hurts too much to go back down stairs to take pictures - fracking metal plates are making it throb. Maybe tomorrow. Not much to look at though.

Ok thanks. It is always great to get ideas from others fishroom. Are you planning on drilling your tanks and installing an automated water changing system?
-
Yes it will have an automated water changing system.
I have horrible water coming from my well. I had a new iron filter / water softner system installed for the house - $2500. Ouch. That makes the water close to okay for fish. But I've run hot and cold water to the room. I will combine those water lines using vacuum breakers to prevent back flow and attempt to get the water supplied to the room roughly 75-80 degrees. The water line will then run through a series of 4 water filters and then get branched off into 3 lines. One a constant (water always on) line that I'll hook a hose up and fill tanks as I desire by opening a ball valve. The 2 other lines will go through a sprinkler solenoid valve and be hooked up to a sprinkler system timer. Each of those lines will have a loop around the room. I will tap each of those loops with drip emitters that will run to each tank. The reason for 2 separate loops is the sprinkler timer will run the loops for different amounts of time - a low hours per day loop and a high number of hours per day loop. The smallest drip emitter is .5 gallons per hour which on a 10 gallon tank couldn't run all day. But I wanted a longer duration of even distribution on the larger tanks. My goal is approximately a 15% to 20% water change daily via the automated system.
When the drip emitters fill the tank the overflow will drain from the tank through a bulk head down to a drain line that goes to my sump. The sump then pumps it out to the woods on my property - this is so the water quantity doesn't tax my septic system.
Also I do have a sink in the room and a python. I'll use the python to clean gravel and waste as anyone normally would. Thank sink does run to my sewage sump though and then gets pump to my septic. I have 2 tanks and 4 long runs in my septic field though so I don't have a huge concern about this amount of water going into my septic. Just as long as the majority of the water changes doesn't.
I'm hopeful that it turns out pretty slick.
-
Also I don't intend on drilling my tanks myself. I plan on buying all new tanks pre-drilled except for 2 - 120's that I'm going to have Chris Benes (Pet Supplier in Highland, MI) drill them for me.
-
My layout with include the following tanks:
Qty / Tank size
15 / 10 Gallon
7 / 15 Gallon
8 / 20 High
4 / 25 Custom
6 / 32 Breeder
4 / 40 Breeder
4 / 50 Breeder
2 / 120 gal (6'x18")
1 / 150 gal (6'x2')
1 / 180 gal (6'x2')
1 / 240 gal (4'x4')
1 / 500 gal (8'x4')

I would be interested in that tank. PM me details. Thanks, Jeff

I couldn't even begin to think of what I would do with a 500 gallon tank!

I could I would charge people to get to go swimming with fish in my basement.

That's funny.
I might even get big fish with a tank that big. Or doing some thing really crazy involving plants. It would have to have plants!
-
Turn it into a garden.
-
Yes, sir! An underwater garden. That's what I would do.
-
Good to hear you're making progress & near completion of your fishroom .
I would also like to take This opportunity to publicly apologize for not making it over & helping you with This project yet.
Hopefully now that I have weekends off I can make it out.

Blair - Don't you worry. There is PLENTY left to do!

Sounds pretty slick indeed - good to hear you've got the water source issues taken care of.

Lookin' good! 8)
-
Looks really nice. What is your plans for humidity control?
-
Very nice Jeff. Its cool to see a vision come together. Can't wait to see the tanks in place.
-
Holy crap!!!! Looks great!
-
Thanks guys.
Josh - I've planned on 2 dehumidifiers that drain into my 2" tank drain line. The plan was to set 1 up and see how it works and add the 2nd if needed. However I'm strongly considering getting this air exchanger - http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-FV-04VE1-WhisperComfortTM-Ventilation-Patent-Pending/dp/B000XJNZ1Y/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1358409120&sr=8-1-fkmr0&keywords=Panasonic+FV-04VE1+WhisperComfortT%3FM+Spot+ERV+Ceiling+Insert+Ventilator+with+Balanced+Ventilation+and+Patent-Pending+Capillary+Core
It is an ERV not a HRV. Basically it doesn't heat as well as an HRV, but is significantly less expensive and has a number of positive reviews. One concern though is that is intended to be used for a much larger area than my little 400 sq ft fish room. Also not overly excited about having a vent penetration though the side of my house. Still considering things.

Have you considered what the operating cost is of the ERV vs 1 or 2 dehumidifiers? Lifespan? Since you're on the fence, those might help direct the decision.

The ERV is significantly less expensive to run than a dehumidifier. But in the winter it will introduce some cold air into the room causing the heater(s) to have to work a little more. Still better energy usage from the ERV though.
-
The vent penetration through the side of the house is probably much easier than running a vertical stack.
IMO the ERV sounds like the best long term solution.

Nice transit platform ::) Is that OSHA approved? Or even a professional Engineering approved method? :-X
-
Just wire it with a switch and/or timer. You shouldn't have to run it constantly anyhow, especially if you have your tanks covered.

We brought in an inspector straight from OSHA who said "**** it. Looks good to me."

You talking about an ERV?
-
BTW to I want to recognize the people who worked on project so far.
Tony G. (Grizzlysdad) - Tony did all the electrical in the room and was invaluable with designing the electrical. When the room is all done I'll point out more of the little cool features Tony included (or if he feels like commenting he can do that now). If you plan on building a room I highly encourage you to at least pick Tony's brain for advise.
Scott S - Scott lives north of Grand Rapids and came down here and stayed with me while working on the room. He has been great to have as a person willing to do everything. I wouldn't let Scott do a full electrical on a fish room simply because I loved how Tony made sure there are proper amount of circuits as my room should never have a circuit overloaded and / or burn down my house. However everything else Scott has been amazing. The room is of my design but Scott has been the one making it come to life with me just being his helper. He's done a great job on the acoustical ceiling, drywall, painting, you name. If you live near Grand Rapids and need someone like Scott I would highly recommend him. (Full disclosure though is like anyone you get to work at your house he is hard to get to show up. But when he does, he does great work.)
-
Yes Jeff, I was talking about the air exchanger. You shouldn't have to run it 24/7. You could probably just flip the switch on when you're down there doing maintenance or feeding your fish and I would think that would be sufficient. Especially if it's rated for a space larger than your room.
-
Looks great. I'll have to stop by and check it out/lend a hand sometime...
-
Great looking room. That has got to feel good having it come to life like that. :)

Before anyone jumps in and starts a room like this I must warn you I have spent WAY more than I planned and in hind sight would not have built this room now that I know the true costs. Costs to get it to this point (not a single tank in the room) is $8,950 and that does NOT include the $2,500 I put into redoing my houses water system. OMG wayyyyyyy more than I even thought. Why did I have to add it all up? UGH! While it looks like a big empty white room there is a ton things that just added up. Even if I did everything myself there was only like $3,000 in labor costs.
Still to go are tanks, racks, and tank lighting. Tanks are going to cost $5500 to $6000 alone.
Total cost is going to be around $16,500 before fish. UGH! Still shaking my head in disbelief. :'(
(Should have bought a new car)
-
Would you get more enjoyment out of watching your new car or fish? It's what makes you happy man.
Still waiting on this guy to get back to me for you. He called me back today and said he would give measurements for me to pass on seeing as he didn't know them

My other passion has always been building cars (muscle cars) and I found out long ago that it is never, I repeat NEVER wise to add up how much you put into a project ;D ;D
It'll be worth it though, sounds & looks like you have one very well thought out fish room there 8)

I'm no expert but I think Tony didn't do the electrical right...

Oops, I meant Scott's
-
This is looking awesome! I will have to add another 500 sq ft onto my minimum size when I start seriously house shopping so I can have one of these. I am so allergic to every pet I own except fish, so maybe this is the way to go.
-
Very cool. Cant wait to see more updates.
-
With a fishroom that nice you are really going to have to have it nicely stocked. So a few more dollars there. How about a nice pair of Blue eyed plecos for that 500 gallon.

Concerning venting the air exchanger. If your basement has glass block windows, and there is one in the fishroom just remove two of the blocks and replace with dryer vents.

He has a walkout, so I don't believe he has windows on the side walls of his basement.

I don't have any of those tanks set up yet. Fish room is still under construction. But here is a thread discussing what I intend to do with the biggest tank - http://michigancichlid.com/simplemachinesforum/index.php?topic=1807.0
I would prefer Leopoldi instead of Motoros but $ is too much.
I will try calling him again today after I get all the fish put away.
Sweet. Like I mentioned before if it holds water I'll gladly commit to it sight unseen.
-
I didn't get to call today because of the large shipment of fish we got today. It was like 13-15 big boxes of fish and coral so I was busy I apologize. I will call saturday
-
All my 10 gallon to 50 gallon tanks where suppose to be delivered today, but got delayed due to the snow storm. Expected to be delivered on Saturday. :)
-
Tanks got delivered earlier tonight. Received:
15 / 10 Gallon
7 / 15 Gallon
8 / 20 High
4 / 25 Custom
6 / 32 Breeder
4 / 40 Breeder
4 / 50 Breeder
They are in the garage. It is a big job just to get them to the basement now. Ughh.
Blair took pictures of them in my garage. Hopefully he'll post them in this thread.

Great looking room. I read where you are painting the floor. Something I did in my fish room may interest you. I painted the floor a light beige color and sprinkled a fleck made by rust oleum and then I put 2 coats of clear over it. The only place I could find the clear that would go over the paint was at Lowe's. It gave the floor a kind of a shiney sand or tank gravel look. It cleans up great but more important it looks nice even when its tracked up after walking in water with dirty shoes.
-
I think the thing you have to be careful of is how slippery the floor is when wet.
-
I painted it with a slip resistant paint intended for exterior concrete.

Good. I didn't want to get the phone call, "Help me, I've fallen and I can't get up!"

Some of those garage floor "paints" get REAL slippery when wet. Even with the added flakes thrown in. My in-laws garage is like this.

-
In my fish room build out, I opted for outdoor carpeting, blue, not that green grass looking stuff. It looks very nice.
Next major job is to replace all the drop ceiling tiles, with FRP. Lots of cutting.
I should have done that BEFORE the carpet went down, but you know, hindsight is always 20/20.
-
Anyone that is expecting an update on fishroom progress I refer you to my filter project (http://michigancichlid.com/simplemachinesforum/index.php?topic=510.0) that was started over a year ago and still is not complete. :P
-
Consider the addition of 4' x 8' insulating panels. They can be cut to fit and tacked directly to the walls using dabs of paneling adhesive.
-
Been working on the room most of yesterday and all of today. Making good progress. I'll be working on it tomorrow from like noon to 10pm. A bunch of people have previously offered to help - Tomorrow would be a great day for it. Call or text me if your willing to help.
Thanks,
Jeff

Too funny, been there done that. My Lowes has a Home Depot not even 100ft across the street from it so I usually have at least one HD visit mixed into the multiple Lowes visits in the course of 48hrs when working on a project ;D

I thought about that and decided to not post any pictures till after the fishroom tour. Building suspense.
Gonna work on the room again next weekend if anyone is interested in coming over. I'll probably even try to feed people too.
-
Your very welcome Jeff! Your going to have one bad azz fish room.
-
Jeff I wish I could have done more and I will be back as soon as I can. No need for food or anything I'm just a friend helping a friend:) can you get a elevator or a escalator as my knee is screaming from the stairs :)
As Stan said your "room" is going to be awesome.
-
Sorry, I couldn't come help. Would have loved to today, but had to be at the airport to fly to CT for training this week.
-
I just remembered that I have a meeting on Saturday that will have me gone from 2pm to 6pm. If anyone was planning on coming over Saturday evening or Sunday would be the best times.
Thanks again,
Jeff
-
Lots done. All racks are built. Started on the stand for the 500. Water was turned on for 1/2 of the system and seems to actually work with only 2 minor / fixable leaks. Hope to get all water turned on tomorrow and the 500 set in place too. $@&# this is a lot of work!
Also figured out I have room for another rack if I want it. ;D

I don't know about that... Your BF Blair might get jealous. :o :P

I just need to take a long walk off a short dock. :'( UGH!
The good - 3 of my 5 racks are installed with all drains lines. Turned the water on for the whole system and not as many leaks as I expected. :)
The bad - 1 rack had questionable craftsmanship and I decided not to use it and will need to build another one. 1 rack I totally screwed up the dimensions and the tanks don't fit. I will need to build a new one. While there wasn't as many leaks as expected the leaks I do have are in the hardest to fix places. :'(
-
It's a marathon, not a sprint. But once you've got it fully setup, it'll be "sitting in a chair with a cold one" watching water changes get done! 8)
-
50/50 chance that I might actually have fish IN the fishroom tonight.
Ordered a whole cargo plane load of fish that will be here beginning of next week, so time to go back and work on the fishroom.

I've gotten a ton done the last few days but I seem to have hit a brick wall today. Everything hurts and I just have to rest. Hopefully I'll be able to get a few things done tonight after I've rested, but regardless I'm at the point of feeling completely screwed no matter what when it comes to being ready for the fish that are coming on Monday. :-[

Jeff
Rest is needed man, even if the fish have to share a tank or two for a few days you are worth more then the fish
-
Thanks four_by_ken. We knocked out a couple hours of quality work on the fishroom tonight.

No problem. Glad I could help. Just got home.
There will be no disappointment in this room, even I'd there were no fish.
Excellent job Jeff.

I feel really bad for letting you down all week Jeff...I wish I could have gotten over to help like we planned. :-[
Things are just not going well with me right now. :(

Yeah, we're now suitably impressed with your fish-keeping progress, but are yours the now-famous "Marb-L-Cons" or "Cal-I-Cons"? :D :D :D

Too late. I already have developed the Marb-L-Cal-I-HRP-Cons and will corner the market. Have wigglers now. Hmmm...I can (dare I say it) RULE THE WORLD!! Bwaa-Haa-Haa!

Everything is still alive today. Well not all the ghost shrimp are still alive as the stingrays invited some of them over for dinner.

Excellent.
I picked the wrong day to help. I should have come to help put fish away. ;D

That is quite a cool list of fish. I look forward to seeing some pictures after the tour is over and people start sharing some of the photos from the trip.

Congrats on getting fish moved into the fishroom. I know it's been a long time coming.

This mean I can post the pictures I've taken?

What is that reflection in the background in some of your pics?
Never mind, I've identified it as Giantforeheadachromis matsoni :P
-
Great pics. Glad they arrived in time.
-

-
Awesome. Can't wait to see it in person.
-
Looks really cool, hope I can make it to the tour to check out what a fish room done correctly looks like.
-
Thanks for having us over to check out the new room, every thing looked great! Can't wait to see it when it's fully finished and fully stocked.
Where did you get those glass lids at?
That is exactly what I need for the way I have my tanks set up, but haven't found them on any of the big sites.

I special ordered them from the manufacturer of my tanks - Aquatic America. Any pet store that sells Aquatic America tanks can order some for you. You can probably order them from Great Lakes in Warren as well.
-
I can get them for you do Frank just dropped off a ton for us as well. I am kinda shocked to hear that name.
