Title: a COOL 55 gallon set up
Post by: RichE on January 09, 2013, 01:03:42 PM
If I dont get this 6ft tank and do freshwater sharks, What would a really cool fish that would do good in a 55 gallon tank.

I want it to be a "talk about tank" for my kids, so when there friends come over it oooh and aaaaw. Thats why I was thinging sharks but 4ft isnt very much once they get big.

Then I was thinking fresh water puffers, but you would have to have a lot to fill a 55 gallon to be noticed.

We already have a "family tank" in the living room, with community fish, but I want this one to be a WOW tank

Solets here the ideas and I cant afford some rare exotic only get it from once source kind a fish LOL

Thanks

Rich

I wouldn't personally...But, that's my 2 cents based on observing other people's fish and doing lots of reading,  not keeping them myself.  Red texas are unpredictable since they're hybrids...regular texas would need a 75g+, IMO.  But they might be OK for a while until they approach their 8-12" max.

Personally, I'd try to put no bigger than an 8" fish in a 55g and that might be pushing it.  I've got my CA cichlids in a 75 and they're going to be crowded when they all reach 4+ inches (they'll all max around 5-6) so I will have to pull some out.

Rich, another interesting option if you want unique fish would be a mixed Asian tank with a group of loaches - yoyo loaches, zebra loaches, skunk loaches, kuhli loaches - lots of fascinating patterns to choose from and as long as you don't try clown loaches (too big) or hillstream loaches (unless you want to do a powerhead and high current), they're pretty cheap and fairly unique.  I really enjoy watching mine.  Add in some other asian fish for the top levels like tiger barbs or denison barbs, and then maybe a centerpiece fish like a gourami (big enough that the barbs won't pick at it, so probably a blue/gold/opaline), and I think it would be a neat tank.

Rope fish are cool.  Like a senegal bichir someone used for Stretch Armstrong.

How big were they when keeping together?  I've heard the delhezi can get cranky when bigger.  Just curious.

I don't think Bull Sharks would do well in a 6 ft tank...   :P

Gold fish. Get some panda moors and some ryukin. Your kids will love them as they get bigger and all there friends will enjoy it as well.

I am going to get the 6ft tank and put "sharks" in it.

Bala sharks, red tail sharks, maybe some tin foil barbs and Raphael cats. I am going to do a PFS sand bottom and make it bright and wide open

That's what's in my "Wow Tank"  4 different kinds of Goldfish, 2 Jellybean Parrots, 4 different kinds of plecos, 3 different kinds of catfish and 2 kind of large clown loaches. Oh, and Bleeding Hearts and Green Neons.

Goldfish are the best fish to keep really. They are also a lot of peoples favorite fish to keep due to how personable they will become if cared for properly. One of my regular customers had the same goldfish for 10 years and was just recently really bummed out when it died.

I've found Jellybean Parrots to be the same way. When I throw algae wafers if for the Plecos the large Jellybean picks one up and swims around the tank like my Rottweiler runs around the yard with a stick.

If you're leaning towards polys I'd suggest you go watch some for a half hour or more at a store somewhere. IMO they are pretty cool for 10-15 minutes and when they are being fed, but otherwise they do a lot of sitting around.

Based on what's been stated, I'd go for something that "ooh" and "ahhs" non-fish people, and that makes a good fish for children. My suggestion is a small school of shubunkins.

My p. senegalus swims all around the tank all day long, but could be a size thing, as he is maybe 4-4.5" vs. a lot of the bigger ones at LFS are closer to 6+ and much thicker, and tend to sit around.  Or maybe a species thing.  But good point to watch the behavior of the fish before buying to see if it's going to be an interesting tank.

im just throwing this out there but what about some gourami's? there are a variety of sp. and some get fairly large. the kissing gourami's are neat for kids to watch but there are all kinds of them available at very reasonable prices. clown loaches are pretty neat fish too. they live for like 60 years but they get a decent size and look really cool.

Blue Gularis --- a large cool looking killifish that would be different (a 55 might handle more than one pair) and you could add some other fish too.

A very cool fish, easy to keep and get a decent size (5-6 inches) and not a problem with other fish it can not eat, in fact it is better if they are not housed with overly aggressive fish.

Dan

I am still working on this, it is going to be the center tank in the fish room(middle of the floor)

It will be the last one I stock but I'm thinking a low light plant amazon driftwood theme so the viewing can be enjoyed from both sides

Cool.  Glad to hear you have not abandoned the project.  Hope it comes together well for you.

If your going with plants and driftwood I like cardinal tetras and rummy nose tetras. They group well, very active, and you can fit a lot of them in a 55. And a dash of pearl gourami or angelfish to keep them tight and moving.

This would look really nice too. I personally think that a school of 40+ cardinals or neons and a few nice rams or angels in a planted tank with nice wood would look AWESOME. Always wanted to do something like that
