Title: Oceans and Seas - Roseville
Post by: four_by_ken on January 03, 2013, 10:30:17 AM
Store is 50-50 saltwater to freshwater.  Just a small handful of Africans.

Nice place to stop in at when in the area.

I've always found rediculous pricing on big New World's.

Sorry to say, this was a good place to buy fish, unfortunately they have gotten greedy and are only worried about making a buck now.  Small fish high prices.   Every time I go in there I see ICK in there tanks...BBW

Recently, saw Rainbows for $8.99.  The same size were 5.99 at Kees.

Someone I know very well just had a bad experience here.  Such a shame to hear.

Two separate customers... 4 workers... all kinds of attitude when one of the customers asked for help.  Oh, and it was the manager that gave the attitude.

They blew an $80 sale and a long time customer... plus, I will not be rushing to go back there... thats for sure.

What a shame.

I was in there about two weeks ago......the person who was there (not the manager) was very helpful.  I ended up leaving with a bucket of bulk flake.

I have been able to negotiate price there as long as you are willing to spend cash.

The manager, who I would describe as a younger male with black hair, somewhat smaller in stature, has been helpful in the past.

I can't say I have had any bad experiences.  I hope they were isolated incidents.

I would say that they are decent, I enjoy there different type fish collections as in corey cats and some kinds of fish you dont see everywhere.

Everything else is normal to above average on price, but if you ask questions they seem to be fair and try to help you out, until one of there Regular's come in and they disappear like the wind. Has happened a few times, but I wont rule them out.

Just got back from there.  Not a great store at the moment.  Limited plant selection. Dirty water and tanks.  Lots of ich and clamped fins.  I would not buy fish from there right now.

The only time I've ever seen an issue with the health of their fish was when their uv sterilizer went on the fritz.

If I recall correctly, each rack is on a central filtration system.  So if the uv is not working, it can be an issue.  In my experience, this is an aberration, not the norm.

I was there yesterday.....  Cichlid selection was very slim species wise IMO & there was ick present in the majority of their tanks.
There prices weren't too bad on the species I thought about picking up tho. I ended up grabbing $25 worth of holy rock.

FYI - I had mostly good experiences there, they have a lot of large South Americans there.  If you join their fish club you gey like 10% off, and they have some buy one get one free deals.
I think they also own Lou's Pet Shop in grosse pointe.

The now own SeaWorld.

But I thought Lou's was privately owned by the same people for 40 years or something.

Joe was the owner, he took over from his dad many years ago.  Joe sold it to O & S., they just moved to a bigger building

Yes, Brian has owned all three (Sea World, Oceans & Seas, and Lou's) for awhile now.

It's crazy how many collectibles Sea World has just in storage.  Brian took me on a tour of the outbuildings and they were stuffed.  He has a huge set of wind chimes that back there that are worth around $5000.00

one last note, I did meet Brian the owner and he was really nice and helped me pull off a big fish deal with him.  He also provided other advice, etc.  So as far as the owner he was a great help.  I do know that sometimes the employees seem cold, even hard to identify if they work there or not.

They are my main LFS and have been working with them for the last few years.  I like the store and get along with them well, but admittedly, I haven't been to many other LFS's other than the big box stores (for other than fish).  I'm hopefully going to get to learn more about some of the other stores in the Detroit/Metro area through this forum.  Especially since I have a 125 gallon tankful of Neolamprologus Brichari that I would like to reduce by about 200 fish.

All the best !!!  :)

Another one of my main LFS stops , The only advice I could give (As if I am  anyone important) Same song same dance , I think this store given location gets more drop in than the others , Change the tanks around , If we wanted a guppy ill go to a chain store , IMO the LFS is the ambassador to predatory fish large fish real tanks Salt watter Barracuda Fresh Watter Wolf EXC....

Went there today.  They had a very good selection of Africans and SA/CA, but as usual with this place, the fish had clamped fins and lots of ich.

I see the last review of this shop was exactly one year ago, I just visited it for the first time the other day when I had to pick up some fish med so thought I would give an updated review.

I was impressed with the amount of dry goods they carry. Foods, wide selection of medications and water treatments, pond supplies, tanks and filters, very nice selection and variety of dry goods for sure. The selection of African cichlids was really pretty dismal though. They had a few tanks with some juvie y.labs and juvie ob's but outside of some SA's they really didn't have much in the way of Africans. Plus some of the community tanks had some illness for sure from what I saw.

Worth a return visit for dry goods for sure, but not worth looking for fish to buy.

I used to live in Mt. Clemens, so Oceans and Seas was one of the only places I could go to get cichlids (I thought they had a great selection before I realized that places like Fantastic Fins and the Aquarium Shop existed). I think they are good for smaller tanganyikans, and everyone is super nice there. My biggest complaint is that I have taken stray fish back there after pairing up a group more than once, and they never let me have store credit.

That's odd, I thought almost all fish stores did fish trade in.
