I have some extra room opening up & have been thinking of doing one of these Malawi feeder fish.
The adults would be housed in a 40/50B .
Let's hear some suggestions & include a reason Why you picked that species
-
A tank full of Electric Yellows, Me and your kids will love them!
-
Bagrus meridionalis! 8)
Why? Because I know you like tank busters! ;D
Oh, and they aren't as colorful as malawian cichlids, which similar to many of those new world species I know you like so much. :P

LOL
For a more serious reply, IME Labidochromis grow slower than a lot of the other common mbuna. I think that the tank size you're thinking of might be a little bit limiting for long term adults to enjoy without possible aggression issues (3+ years). Some of the common zebras could work (red, cobalt, etc). Some of the smaller haps might be alright as well (Smaller Protomelas, Placidochromis electra, Otopharynx lithobates or tetraspilus, etc).

Decided to go for that dugout after all, knocking out one of the basement walls? :)
I second electric yellows - kids will think they're purty. Or red zebras, same reason. What's your favorite color? Yellow? Orange? Blue? Maybe pick one of those.
-
No, No Yellow Labs. It hasn't even been two years since I sold my breeding group.
Plus , I want something not so common. I've been thinking of going with some Lethrinops Mbasi Creek, if I can find them.
Ron- If I had room for Emperors.... I'd get some Fuscos ;)

Those would be cool.

Emperors are Boulengerochromis microlepis and actually from Lake Tanganyika. (I will admit they were my first brief thought when I read your post.)
Since you never specified it had to be a cichlid from Lake Malawi, I went with a catfish, in particular the biggest fish in the entire lake!

Nice looking fish, I been considering Lethrinops sp. "Red Cap" (Itungi)
Or how how about a tank full of "Saulosi"
-
nyassachromis orange caps. More on the hard to get side.
-
Lethrinops Mbasi Creek would be a nice addition. I have some Lethrinops Red Cap, nice looking fish. I have nine of them in a 40 breeder.
-
Here is a cool fish for you, Blair. Pseudotropheus aurora "Likoma". Very pretty.
-
another nice choose Metriaclima sp. "Red Top Gallireya"
-
I've already done Auroras. I have thought about some Red Top Gallis though
If I went with a Metriclima I'd rather dedicate a 75/90 to the parents & IDK if I'm ready to do that. I only have 4 48x18 bottom tanks, but I have 8 36x18 ;)
-
I'm not sure they're Malawian, but I like Livingstoni. That's what I'd get. Never had them though...

I ran across some 4" Polystigma today while making some LFS rounds & if they would've had more than two, I would've grabbed 4 or so. But, then I might as well say screw it & switch out my 125 & get some Fusco. Because a 40/50B is too small of a tank to do any of those species.

Tony, do you happen to know if She can make good sammiches?
-
sammiches, sammiches, sammiches! lol
-
Trematocranus placodon
Protomelas kirkii
Protomelas insignis
-
Trematocranus placodon
Protomelas kirkii
Protomelas insignis
let me guess... these are species you have available?
I'd have to look up the other two, but it's only been a few years since I Did Insignis
-
Nope, just species I thought looked cool. I haven't kept any of them, but I noticed that Ron posted some large juvenile Protomelas kirkii this morning.
-
Trematocranus placodon are really cool fish too
-
Help, so much for not getting a bread&butter species....
U picked up a breeding group of Yellow tail Aceii today at John Piippo's place.

Talking in the third person here? :P
-
Lol, that would be a typo.... I can't always be perfect :P
-
Hey Blair how many aceii? How about some pictures of them.
-
I have 11 total as I added 2 to John's group today. No pictures, but I might do a short video later.
-
If they're of breeding age, you'll be flooded with fry in no time...
