Yes I hope Marty will have given them back by then. I have No idea why he wanted them so bad,but I trust the Prime Minister is taking good care of them..

I thought I was gonna get them back yesterday evening,  because I talked to him on the subject via phone.  He said something about coming out & I took it as he was going to come out this way & give me my nuts back. But, he didn't show. Now I'm here wondering just what he meant.

Does anybody have a  clue why Marty would announce that he's coming out?  Or what he meant?

You misheard me (wishful thinking I guess), I said I was coming out for a visit.  I guess you've been good long enough, you can have your nuts back.

Thanks - Jim

I've seen both there, but of the two tropheus are more common. I'm also not sure I've ever seen an auction that didn't have any tropheus FWIW.  ;)

I'm new to these actions and I was wondering if there is any cyps that go throughs or even more buffalo head

From what I have heard buffalo head are pretty hard to come by and get to spawn.
Title: Re: 2013 January Auction

I've seen both at the auctions.  Cyprochromis are probably a little less common at the auctions.  Buffaloheads seem to go in cycles where they are commonly available and then scarce for awhile.

Clown loaches won't be there unless they're a raffle item.  I would be very surprised if there weren't any bristlenose plecos.  If there aren't, you can come by my place for some  ;)

As Marty stated there will almost certainly be Ancistrus available and there might just be a Clown Loach or two in the Rare Fish Raffle  ;)

My husband arranged someone to watch our kids, bless him, and I think we will be making the drive out from Rockford. Fish I am interested in are:

Labidochromis chisumulae
Pseudotropheus cyaneorhabdos/Maingano
Cynotilapia afra (Cobue)
Pseudotropheus sp. "elongatus chailosi"
Tropheops sp. "Mauve yellow"
Pseudotropheus saulosi
Synodontis catfish

Is it possible that any of those might be there? I'd prefer older fry to 2" size but will get adults if that is all there is.

Also, is there somewhere that goes over event activities, or has photos from last years event?

I have seen all of these at previous auctions but there is no telling if they will show up at this one.  Well... I can pretty much guarantee there will be some Synodontis at the auction.  FYI the cyaneorhabdos/Maingano are very frequently mislabeled as Johanni / Elec. Blue Johanni or something similar.  If they are fry and blue than they are not Johanni but actually the Cyan... / Maingano that you are looking for because Johanni fry are orange color.

A word of caution on the Tropheops.  They are extremely aggressive towards everything.  If you keep them I wouldn't keep anything else in the tank.  Keep like 1 male and 3 or 4 females.  And LOTS of hiding places for the females.

Please introduce yourself at the auction.  Always nice to put a face to a screen name.

Great! I didn't want to make the drive out if none of those had a chance of being there. I will cross the Tropheops off my list and make sure the Mainganos I buy are all blue . :)

I have never been to a fish auction before. Is that exactly what it is - people bidding on bags of fish, or will there be ones available for fixed prices. Just trying to know what to expect. Also, how long does the event usually go until?
Title: Re: 2013 January Auction

It will be bidding on bags of fish at this one.  I believe a "buy it now" table will be a feature for the fall MCA auction but not this one.  It is currently a  feature at some other auctions (e.g. MCAS, possibly GDAS, can't remember for sure).

Usually lasts until around 4PM, based on what I've been told of past auctions.  Again, this can be unpredictable, as the last MCAS auction I went to normally would go to 5pm and instead went to almost 8PM.

But if there's something you really want, pay the $2 priority bid fee and get the item bumped to the front of the line.  Doesn't guarantee you'll win it but at least you won't be gone all day just waiting for one bag and possibly miss it.

So all the bags of fish that will be bid on will be out where they can be looked at, starting at 11 am? Or should I arrive a bit sooner than 11, and the bidding starts at 11 am sharp? Thank you everyone for clarifying things - it is a big help to know what to expect when we're making this long of a drive.

You will be able to preview the fish and they will be tagged , so if you see something you are interested in just write down the bag number and then when you hear that its up you are ready.

Its a lot of fun and a great group of people to be around:)

As sellers register the fish will be put on tables for viewing which can be done at any time from a few minutes before the auction starts until the auction ends.  It is HIGHLY encouraged to make notes of bag ID numbers that you are interested in while viewing them on the tables, so that when they go up for bid it is the exact bag you happen to be interested in.  But to be honest most of us don't make those notes and end up bidding on stuff that we thought was something else.  I had to learn my lesson to listen carefully to the reader announcing the auction item carefully when I was the winning bidder on some neolamprologus tetracanthus when I thought it was neolamprologus tretocephalus.  Whoops.

The best way to know whats coming up and you can view them is to be a runner.
You help out the club and yourself.

I wouldn't dwell too mucha on the long drive from Rockford whether it's Michigan or Illinois.  At these auctions you'll find hobbyists from Kalamazoo, Grand Rapids, Columbus and Cleveland, Ohio, Indianapolis, why there's even a hobbyist living in Texas who attempts to find a reason to be in the area right around these functions.

Must be something to these functions that make them so interesting.  So, come on down and enjoy the day with us.

Haha, my husband looked worried when I told him that it sometimes runs as late as 8pm.  We drove to Columbus and stayed at a hotel for a chicken show a few months ago, so this isn't quite as crazy. Trying to decide if I could hook up a small aquarium heater to my cig outlet and float the bags in a bucket on the way home. ;D

You'll find the fish bagged by hobbyists at the auction are bagged really well compared to what you'll get at a typical LFS using 1-2 mil bags filled 80% with water since they anticipate you've got a 30 minute ride home. Most bags should be double-bagged with enough O2 for the fish to last the majority of the day, if not longer (water volume isn't as critical as air volume in the bags).

To keep bags warm on the ride home, bring a large cooler if you have one (or a few). Sometimes there are also styrofoam boxes donated to the club during the auction to be sold off, but I wouldn't guarantee this will happen and you'll get one. For heat, either just the heat 75F+ in the car, or use heat-packs/hand warmers/body warmers wrapped in newspaper and taped to the to the lid of the styro/cooler.

Where do I buy the plastic fish bags? Should I double bag all the fish I am bringing to the auction? If I separate all the males & females I only have enough to single bag them all.  :(

My LFS sells fish bags 8 for $1.  Bigger ones are still less than 20 cents each.  You could start there.  Don't use ziplocs or anything like that.

Best is to put in water and fish, then tie off that bag.  Then put the 'top' of that first bag into the bottom of the 2nd.  So the two openings are on opposite ends.  That way you're less likely to have the bag come open when it's handled etc.

Inverting them and closing the second bag also eliminates all the corners so fish don't accidently become pinched when bags are moved/handled.

You dont have to separate all males and females.  Only if its a breeding pair and being sold as such.  I could be wrong but none of the fish I purchased last auction were separated.

In this case I recommended they be bagged separate due to the species.

To all new-comers to the auction tomorrow:

Be cautious about waving to anyone once the auction starts, or just waving your arms in general.  You might end up with an unexpected purchase...I speak from experience.  It was a funny way to learn about auction etiquette.

funny you say that as I always pay attention to the auctioneer when I put my arms behind my head. I wanna make sure he doesn't think I'm bidding
