Post by: SKISWETPETS on September 30, 2011, 07:35:03 PM: My latest will be, a batch of Ngara White Tail Acei, I tried for the first time today to strip the female for the experience, and the fry weren't quite ready yet. I think i may lose the two that came out. The egg sacks were still attached to them. Have to wait and see. :(

8) So just a little update, I stripped the female two days ago now, and i now have 25 or 26 fry that i need to raise up. They are small, and are gonna take some time. Wish me some luck... 8)

I screwed up the Hippo Points but have a some Gigas that made it and are growing out. I have had other spawns but didn't pull them as I want to thin out a bit and slow down, It is officially HUNTING SEASON now after all.

everything from flake and pellets to live food they get something different
everyday.

How many do you have in your tank ? And do you mix them ?

Post by: 54zamboni on October 27, 2011, 10:27:38 PM: there's probably 35-38 F1's adullts that i grew up from fry from 2 diff. sources. if i let them spit in the tank there are no survivors, no matter how much cover i provided. i've sold the fry since i started stripping them, so the answer is no, i haven't mixed any fry back into the tank. they're currently in a 6' 110g -- previouosly had them in a 180g, but needed that tank for a group of kitumba fronts that needed the bigger tank.

Not sure I am ready for them yet and not sure if I want to tear my 90 gallon apart to catch and strip her. May just do so tonight though.....

Deep Mgunga Red all produce fry for me. I have also gotten fry from my Crimson Tides, Kenya Golds, Ruby Reds, Benga Sunshines, Astotalapia Aneocolors, Bi-Color 500, and Pundamilia SP. "Red Flank". We have been busy 8)

Anyhow, my fish have been busy.
I have fry from my Cobue afra group, White Top afra group, Ngara acei trio, and several of my Mozambique peacock females are holding. My wild pair of Lwanda peacocks spawned but the female got smoked by the dang White Top afra male >:(

I had just seen her still holding about 5 hours earlier. By the time I tore it apart I saw one wiggler and it got ate by a Synodontis Multi.

Hey archer how did that tank work out for you? Haven't heard from you and was just wondering.

3 more Electric Yellows are holding.
Stripped 5 female Mozambique "Cobue" Peacock females for over 100 fry!!!! And yes, I added some trios to my sale list!!!
2 Cynotilapia afra "Cobue" are holding and are on my "For Sale" thread
I believe at least 2 of the Cynotilapia afra "Hara" ""White Top" are holding (and for sale)
And the best thing I discovered tonight......
one of my wild caught female Copadichromis trewavasae "Likoma" are holding!!!

I thought I sold them too, but he never came and got them. I had to move stuff around to accommodate the Discus I'm getting and noticed one holding. I put my 5 adults in the same tank with my tropheops - if they get along okay I'm just going to keep the adults.

I won't be keeping the fry - gosh I'm totally out of space as it is - so I'll let you know.

Cobue afra holding. Chrysonotus that came in Tuesday are already spawning.
I'm sure I'll find more tomorrow when I clean tanks and move fish around.

I operate a small part-time wholesale business. I order from wholesalers that do not sell to the general public and I sell mainly to stores but, I will sell certain items to club/forum members as long as it's not a fish my store accounts have ordered.

Yeah it does. Like i said, i was just curious. Ive thought of doing something like that up here before, just as a part time thing. But im not really sure about it yet. For now just a hobby with some cash sales to friends and such, by appointment sortof.. :P :P

Close - two moms, but both from the same tank. I was really hoping to only get fat black fry from both, but alas, I guess one's too good for the cats to fool.

Yep! There's one in the 4th quadrant that's turned sideways compared to the rest, that really shows the fin color present in the fry.

In my many years of keeping cichlids ,if there are males and females of the same species present they usually will not cross breed.
But if there are only a smattering of certain females, almost any male will go ofter her...kinda like if you were stuck on a desert island and the only women were three eyed pygmies with sea shells for ears....eventually you'd be like "Hey baby, How you doin?" :o
However there are times where it hasn't mattered in my experience.
I once had a 180g show tank with a very diverse selection of Malawi cichlids.
There was a group of male and female Electric Yellows but the males never were allowed to breed with the females because I had a rare Labeo. fuelleborni male that INSISTED on breeding with the female Yellows. It would totally ignore the many female fuelleborni that were in the tank. I of course fed off the hybrid fry/eggs to some of my predators.
This male L. fuelleborni looked a lot like an Electric Yellow...it had black fins, yellowish body, and a purple head and facial mask.
I actually thought it was a hybrid at the time, but after talking to several experts at cichlid conventions (i.e. Ad Konings, etc.) I was told there is a form of fuelleborni like this in the lake.

There is ALWAYS several Electric Yellows holding, but with only a few males and 15 or more females, they are constantly spawning.
I also noticed yesterday that one of my wild caught Protomelas sp. "Pombo Yellow Chin" is holding! :) I waited for this particular species for quite a few years and now I have them and they are reproducing...too bad I am not saving fry :(.
My wild caught Copadichromis trewavassae "Likoma" have also spawned in there recently.
Now all that needs to spawn is the wild caught Aulonocara maylandi "Sulfur Head" and it will be a wild trifecta of rarities :D.
I can't wait until the Pseudotropheus dolphin I got from Jeff get old enough to spawn in there.

p.s. No, I am not diving in for the holding females 8)

From what I've seen, when the males are around 5"-5.5" and the females around 4"-4.5" they start to get interested, but it takes them a few tries to hold successfully. Around that time the males also start showing flashes of their full color - dark black with blue/green highlights.

I can't help it! I love the little bastards lol .Maybe now that school and work are slowing a bit I can build my mini fish room so I can really get these guys going. Only 11 fry right now but since I have some free time spared up i should be able to strip one every few weeks. 2 are on the clock for 14 more days and another 1 should be ready this weeknd.I'm looking forward to bringing some to the auctions.

I am guessing that they hatched about a week ago or so and when I found them the parents were dutifully leading them around the tank. Very happy as this as been on my list of fish that I have wanted for some time. I will try to get a pick but they stay at the back of the tank most of the time.

I had two small males this summer and when John and Betty Oyer had their open house I picked up 5 small ones.
These have grown up to where I have 2 males 3 females and 2 not sure
Any way I have two females that are holding
I am gonna wait a while and then move the females to a seperate tanke

These fish breed like..... well..... electric yellows but since I have never pulled the fry this is the first time I have gotten teir fry to about a half inch

"lanisticola north" spawn for the first time in addition to my Albino yellow labs spawning for the first time as well. In addition to these I also have the usual suspects holding: yellow labs, white labs, blue dolphins, alhi's, nyereri, and taiwan reef's. And of course noticed more multi and barchardi fry swimming around.

No they are from mine, I have a group of six. We both got them from the same source.

The female who is holding seems to have gotten her throat torn up a bit though & I'm unsure if she's going to handle brooding them.

The original group I bought at about 1 1/2" and they were beginning to produce small batches of fry at less than 3". These are their grandchildren and they've taken forever to get to this first spawn. The females are four inches or more and the two larger males are 7" and 6" respectively and even prettier than the commercial pics this evening!

Very cool to see those little guys swimming arround. Now I just have to wait for my Ngara White Tail to spit ;D ;D

Nope I have albino yellow labs as well. Yellow bodies, no black and pink eyes. Not seen too often around here.

Did a water change and redecorated a tank today, about half hour later the haplochromis SP. 44 spawned, and I can see the female holding.
Labidochromis sp. hongi redtop were doing their courtship dance tonight for the first time. Can't tell if she is holding yet.

After four spawns with the eggs being eaten, I changed the females, and now I finally got swimmers! Lol

Purple Occelatus for the 2nd. time....they ate their first batch when they reached 1/16 inch.. :( ..I "thought" the first batch would be "safe" when they spawned again. Well, that was a mistake, I assume they considered them a "threat" to the new fry when hatched and devoured them. This time-I took the parents out when they started to get close to the previous size. A lesson learned. 8) It reminded me of the Convict Cichlids I had and wiped-out their previous fry before breeding again. So far-the fry are doing well. :)

Was moving the 4 that I had into a different tank and as I was moving them I see little fry swimming around. I was able to catch about 10, and now I'm letting the tank settle so I can see if there anymore.

This a huge deal to me as this is the first batch of fry that I really want to breed, I have had convicts and misc peacocks breed but those turned into fish food.

This is awesome ;D

Great! I will loan you some pleco caves if you give me some fry afterward. :) Just kidding. But I seem to have no success with plecos so far.

Yeah looks like at least two of them now. She didn't hold beyond 5 days though. Decided to move them on and took them to the auction Saturday.

It was my original two, but the added numbers definitely made them a lot more comfortable. Before I got yours they mostly just hid in the rocks, now they swim around as a big group.

Not sure, I have 10 gold occies in sn 85 gallon with Chimba Tiger Nausta. I am just chalking last time up as it was their first spawn. The fry as of last night was in a shell, I was debating on pullung that shell out.

"Joshes spawn, and fish that came from josh spawning." would be a good one. Stripped my first female today :) 13 eggs in tumbler from nyererei that came from Josh. His fish are great quality.

The Mbamba bay female just spit about 35 fry the other day, so far all are surviving just fine.

Not sure what happened, they just all died off. everything was fine, hadn't messed with anything water wise :(

Curious as to the typical number of fry.. Excited.. first time with Cyps. Also had a small yellow lab split half a dozen, but seems to be holding more. I have so many yellow labs now I don't know what to do with them.. LOL

Also have a female Mloto Ivory Head holding.. will see.. she didnt hold them long last time..

Grow them bad boys out, turn them in for BAP & get your certificate. You never know when they'll spawn again for you. (Although it's quite possible it'll happen tomorrow. :P )

BAP is Breeders Award Program and you certificates and points for each species your spawn and turn in. Then they are auctioned off at the meetings.

Cyathofarynx foai Halembe green - first spawn in my young group of these uncommon Tanganyikan featherfins. Have been waiting for some years to get this species going. We'll see if the eggs are fertile as the female is just over 3" and the males just under 4".

WC Neo. Tretacephalus... This took a lot of different moves. From 3 tanks, different rock formations, 3 time outs in one tank and 3-4 in this last one. A 180g tank with some WC Petro Moshi and some cichlid rocks. Finally paid off! ;)

I have 10 WC Petrochromis in there and a WC male Eretmodus that has killed 2 out of the other Wild Eretmodus that he's been with. They've chased him off a few times and now he just sticks to his side of the tank. They Trets just let the Moshi know that they should give them space and they do...

I counted over 90 in the photos and there's quite a few more off to the left that can't be seen in the photos.

P.S. The cluster of white things in the back of the rock is aragonite substrate they didn't clean out. I had put a bunch in the bottom of that rock and they cleaned all but that out.

(Not bad for a new tank.) After a heater malfunction, I currently have 19 Lion fry and 28 Lion eggs in the tumbler. Sadly I lost over half my free swimming fry but the survivors are healthy.

All still under 4 inches and to my surprise, after going up north for the week, the female festae and male convict decided they were gonna mate. Smh. And now i have a nice batch of mutts, or feeders hopefully. My only problem is they seem to work really well as parents together.

Lost all six of her first time fry, three to other fish, and three saved found in breeder box unresponsive. Probably stress related. Total fry I have is 26 from two females. Love what you do people!
