Working on a small project. Just a little 10g tank to use as a quarantine tank for any new fish, or sick fish as well. But I figured just because it's a quarantine tank is no reason it can't be purdy :D Picked up a PennPlax heater at the LFS in the used equipment section for $3. And then a 10g T5 light for $12.00. And just finishing up a little 3D Background for it. Also making some matching "stalagmites" out of styro to give any quarantined fish a bit more feeling of comfort. Should have those done and sand washed and cycling tomorrow most likely.
Carved out and drylok painted.

Painted tan with shading done.

What LFS has a used equipment section?

Tropical Fish Pond on Woodward just south of 14 mile. I wouldn't go just for the used stuff though unless you live with in a mile or two of it like I do. Because they don't have very much used stuff at all. Mainly just a shelf in the back with a few heaters, lights, air pumps bunch of 20g tanks and assorted other common everyday items. Nothing too special but I do like to stop in from time to time just to see what sort of used stuff they have.
I did see that they do have a note on the wall that one of the employees are selling a metal Halide light set up for $100 though when I was in there the other day. Seems like a good deal on that, but no idea of the size or condition of it but thought that was worth noting.

I would personally be wary of used heaters, as I have had three or four fail of the 10-12 I've gotten used from Craigslist or wherever over the past 6 months. Lost half my fry in a 10g a month or two back when one of them stuck on and got up to 90+ degrees. FWIW.

Dan Is spot on about used heaters, not used filters those are worth it

If I were buying for one of my main tanks then yeah I would buy a new heater for sure. But this is just a quarantine tank that I'll be putting some small Syno cats in to quarantine them for a month before I put them in my main tank. Plus I'll be fishless cycling the tank for a month before any fish go in it at all. So if it works fine for a month then, as simple as a tube heater is I really don't think much is going to go wrong with it that wouldn't go wrong with any other heater new or old.

Well got it all done this evening. The three larger rocks are also styrofoam Drylok'd and shaded to match the background. Will start fishless cycling it tomorrow. Should be a nice cozy temporary home for any quarantined fish. May end up keeping a couple small fish in it when it is not home to a quarantined fish just to keep it cycled so it's always ready.
