Title: hi! I'm new here and to cichlids, too!

Hello everyone. Just thought i would introduce myself. I'm Charlene, and i inherited a cichlid. Or so I'm told.
To be quite honest i have no idea what that fish is but he is fascinating. I was trying to do some research last night and came across these forums. Yay! 
Anyway, i was interested in getting a larger tank and more fish  and this seemed a good place to start.

I'm not sure which species that fish of yours is. So, I cannot give you any names or information on it. (Sorry, not good with the dwarf species)

Its a ram I've just never seen one with that little of color to it.

Could be a Bolivian ram but give it time to settle in.

It is definitely Microgeophagus Altispinosa (bolivian ram) crank the temp up a little, toss in some drift wood and his colors should definitely pop.
