Title: Bruce's Pond Shop - Brownstown
Post by: Marty on November 04, 2012, 02:47:41 PM
I visited this store with Laif Demason this past Friday.  While it is a little difficult to get to at the moment due to construction (should be wrapped up in a couple of weeks)  I was pleasantly surprised at the amount of cichlids they had in stock.  They have a number of sizes from small to show size.

We talked to the owner, and apparently they concentrate on koi during the warm months, and switch over to tropical fish during the winter.  Prices were moderate to high, but everything looked healthy and the store was clean and in good shape.

I don't know their hours, so I would call first before heading out.

I also was told that on Fridays, they have a buy two get one free special.

I go in there all the time, Bruce has has a great selection and nice looking fish.  Worth trying to visit especially when they get new shipments in.  If he doesn't have something you are looking for he will try and get it.

I just stocked my 55 Peacock tank from Bruce's Pond Shop, imo the prices are the best in town.  Most juveniles run roughly $8.00 each.  Bruce has been very helpful in stocking my tank,  he toko the time to sit down with me and explain what fish would best cohabitate with each other. He has even ordered fish that I wanted but he did not have.  Excellant source for all cichlids. If you haven't been there, I would put it on your to do list.

The $8 buck cichlid deal Bruce is offering now is much better because it now all week.  No more price hikes after Friday. His fish are very healthy and hearty. One more thing, if you buy a fish and it does not work out, he will take it back. Unlike some shops (Kee's and maybe others) who do not follow this practice.  Any cichlid owner will know that sometimes a fish just does cohabitate with your tank. The Aquarium Shop does this as well.  I would believe most of the more "customer oriented" shops do follow this policy.

Couldn't agree more.  I shop there all the time.  Bruce is great to deal with and always has a variety of different fish.

I stopped in last night.  Very nice store.  Very clean and well kept.

They have more medium size Africans than most stores.  My only complaint, I would like to see more on the smaller size.

If it was closer to home, I would stop in often.  Just a little too far of a drive for me.

People were very friendly too.

I would like to go back in the summer to check out their Koi setup.  Sounds like quite the deal.

Interesting, from my experience he has the most extensive smaller peacock stock around, the only other LFS that would compare would be The Aquarium Shop in R.O.

Maybe you caught him on day when he was low on stock?  I have bought most of my 21+ peacocks from him over the past 3 weeks or so.

In fact he has ordered a Masoni Peacock for me. See link below

Dont get me wrong... the place is REAL nice.  The main guy and girl where not there.  I guess he had an operation or something.  But the people in their place were very nice and helpful.  From them... sounds like they are willing to find fish if they dont have them, etc.  Nice customer service.

I would say Bruce's is comparable on quantity of stock to The Aquarium Shop.  But the Aquarium Shop is much smaller in space.    Med to large size Africans... Bruce's has WAY more.  Preuss may be the only shop that has more med to large adult Africans that I have been to.

Maybe I was expecting too much going in.

I would get rid of 1/3 of the large African tanks and put small ones in their place.

Not complaining at all.  I just wish it was closer.  I would visit a lot if it wasnt 1.5hrs from me.

Actually I kind of like it that he has the med to larger cichlids,  while perusing the juevies, you can see what the fish will look like when it hits adulthood. Most of the fish I bought were because of this.  "hey what will this look like?"  Boom !  there it is...

They still have the greenhouse for their koi.  I am going to head back in spring time when they open the greenhouses again for the koi.
