Title: Cause for concern?
Post by: JClem on October 26, 2012, 01:19:22 PM
i finally got my Salvini male moved to the breeder tank with the female. After taking him out of the community tank and getting him settled, I noticed this wound seen in the picture. I'm not sure if it's just a battle wound from a fight, if he snagged on a rock or piece of wood while I was trying to net him or if it's some kind of disease. It looks somewhat deep into the tissue under his scales. Any help? Whatever it is, should I try to treat it with anything or just let him recover on his own?

Looks like a wound you could treat him or just let him recover on his own. As long as he isn't being picked on by the female I wouldn't stress it

You can add salt to the tank to expedite healing as long as you don't have salt sensitive fish (like corydoras) in the tank.  1 tablespoon per ten gallons is a good rule of thumb.

Wet Thumb Aquatics also sells a product named Wound Ease that promotes healing.  If you're not close to them, you can also use Stress Coat.

I'd just toss some salt in the tank, keep an eye on it&  go from there. Sals are pretty tough fish.

Edit - what temperature do you have their tank at?

Thanks for the tips. I typically put salt in the tank at a water change, will adding more hurt anything? The temp is set at 78.

so far, they seem to be getting along- doesn't seem the move has turned them against one another, but they are sort of just co-existing. He has overtaken her prime cave spot and she moved to another rock pile, so time will tell if they'll spawn again anytime soon.

I rarely add salt, so I'll leave that for somebody else to answer.

Is 78° what you keep your tank at when you want them to spawn?  That's a bit low for me. I like to put them around 86°

I'll bump the temp up- this is the first time I'm trying to get them to spawn. The first couple times it just happened in the community tank. I keep it around 78-80 do didn't really think about it. He's brought his colors out a ton since I moved him, so hopefully that's a good sign
