Does anybody know anything about this business? They have quite a list of options.
http://www.davesfish.com/
-
That's Dave Shumacher, he runs a reputable business.
IIRC- it used to be Armkes or something like that years ago. But, he's been around for a long time& I've seen many people, on various forums, order from him& be satisfied .
-
if you make an order i see some fish i want
-
I previously mentioned that Marty or I was planning to put an order together. If Marty does not do an order from Old World, I was planning to put one together from Dave's.
This would not be like previous orders that I brought in, i.e. I buy everything and you shop from my stock.
He doesn't offer wholesale pricing (I already checked).
I will not be marking his prices up for my profit so what his list shows is your base price. Each person would be responsible for an additional cost percentage for shipping. I would put the order together and pick it up at the airport for us.
I'm just waiting to hear from Marty if he is going to do the order from Old World....stay tuned ;).
-
I ordered from him before and have talked with him. Good guy to deal with.
-
I agree with others that Dave is a reputable dealer, very knowledgable and a nice guy. I've met Dave in his retail shop in San Antonio which he's now closed. He remains in business, just doesn't operate a retail shop any longer. I found his prices a little higher than other options but if he's got something you want and can't find elsewhere, I wouldn't hesitate to buy from Dave.
-
The are a few fish on his list I wouldn't mind picking up. I am willing to participate in a group order through him or even arrange one around late February if enough interest is shown
-
Tony
Did you ever deiced to place a group order with this guy?

Tony
Did you ever deiced to place a group order with this guy?
No, not yet since Blair has the New World order currently in progress.
I am possibly going to put this one together after that...I already have been in touch with Dave regarding us doing a group order so it would hopefully be soon, (a month or two)

Me too. Dave has some fish I want, hopefully he still will when it is order time.

He has absolutly the highest quality of fish at a very good price I have had many awsome orders from his. Store. He has a live on delervery policy. That is second to none. If the order goes through I'm 100% in on this. If anyone is looking for somthing inperticujlar. All you need to do is call. And actualy talk to dave. He will more than likely get it if he does not have it in stock but his stock is very vast. His web page is normaly. Up to date. Forare fishb or anythang I have to order. I. Go through daves.
-
Looks like I'll be setting up a few more tanks here really soon so I'm ready. Now I just have to figure out what I want
-
I called Dave today and got his voice mail. He and his wife are expecting a baby very soon and he's not available via phone.
I plan to send him an email to see if we should wait to place a group order. I will let everyone know asap.

Dave and his wife had their baby over the weekend and he mentioned he would only be in the store a few days this week.

I might be interested in picking up a couple fish too... it will be a game time decision for me though.

Are there minimums when buying from here?
Any word on when this might happen?

I plan to get the order together in February...probably arrange pick up at the MCA March meerting.
BTW, we have a great speaker arranged for March's meeting...Doug Sweet, the former curator of the Belle Isle Aquarium.
I will be talking to Dave in the next week or so and will get more details.

LOL, sorry Dan. Look at it this way though...I doubt Dave is going out of business anytime soon, so we can do a future order with him again sometime...as well as doing group buys from other sellers. The important thing is buy the house so you can build a kick-butt fish room...which you will then need to fill with equally kick-butt fish.

When I came home earlier and my basement was flooded I figured that could be a kick butt fish room until I got yelled at because the couch down there was getting wet. So I got so little help to bring it up the stairs... Best part is landlord says its my fault...

February.... ok, cool. Thats only two days away!!!! 8)

Here's my veiws on it.... Unless you're breeding & want to diversify the genes in your fry, it is better to buy from a local person.
.You can see the fish first hand before money changes hands & the money you pay is supporting our economy, as opposed to another state.
-
Not looking to breed them. Just our personal tanks. Problem being... I cant find the darn things anywhere local. I would for sure like to see them first. I am a 100% supporter of buying local.
We are going to give a shot with the Albus on breeding, but yet still a display tank. We'll see how that breeding experiment goes.
-
I might have to save some extra and get some female mylochroms. 3 for sure males and 1 for sure female 1 a I dunno.
-
Has a datebeen set the the Old World group order?
-
Okay, I just hung up with Dave and he said his list is not up to date right now. The new baby is keeping him quite busy.
He will be sending me an email over the weekend or early next week with a new list which I will then post, along with more group buy details.
I plan to start taking everyone's orders and payments as soon as the list is up. The deadline for payments will be at the March 1st MCA general meeting. I will place the order the day after the meeting and we can expect the shipment sometime the following week.
I will be starting a new thread once I get the new list so, stay tuned.
-
Talked to Dave again yesterday and he hopes to have the list updated today or tomorrow...I guess the new baby has him busy ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Any update on when this order is going to arrive ?
-
Lol, it's only 8:00am in Texas, give the man some time!
-
Okay, the order was placed over the weekend and I just hung up with Dave a minute ago.
There were a few items he was out of but he will have them back in stock on Thursday.
So he offered to hold everything else for us until then and we will get the shipment early to mid next week.
Obviously stay tuned for further updates.
Please note, I know many of you are excited to get your fish but, if I do not post an update in this thread, then there is no new info.
-
It's been 40min.... heard anything else ? :P
-
It sure was nice to see the sun yesterday. ;)

The order will be coming in on Thursday, March 14th. The exact time of day has not been determined but I expect it will be early afternoon. I will update this thread again once I get flight schedule confirmation.
Also, for everyone that ordered fish, you might want to click the "notify" button at the bottom of these posts. You will automatically receive an email when there is a reply to this thread.

Yes, that way I might be able to deliver to the meeting if people can't meet at the airport.

Another bingo night?

Another bingo night?
Yes sir
Motor City Aquarium Society is having their fishy bingo
-
So, what is the preferred way to meet up with you for the fish?
I have to work until about 6:00. Not sure where the MCAS bingo is at, its not list on their website that I saw.

Got this from an email from Vic.
Fishy Bingo
When: Thursday, 7:00 PM, March 14th, 2013
Where: Crash Landing Restaurant and Bar 26620 Dequindre Rd Warren MI 48091

That would actually work out great for me!
-
Please note~Dave packs the fish and drops them off on Wednesday night to go out Thursday morning. I highly recommend everyone getting there fish when they first come in. However, I have offered to bring fish to the MCAS meeting Thursday night for those that cannot make it to the airport. If that is the case I will keep your fish warm and in the shipping boxes but I will not be re-bagging fish and I am not responsible for any losses. Dave's policy on DOA is on his website.

Do you have an idea of timing as far as when they will arrive at the airport? Or when you will get back to you house with them?

Tony - Thank you for posting updates.
-
For those of you that are first timers with air cargo, the shipment isn't confirmed until it goes out on the flight.
The shipper gives an air bill number, and even an expected time of departure, but unfortunately for those of us on the receiving end, the only concrete info is the day it actually boards the flight. Once that happens I can update this thread with the ETA for the shipment. Unfortunately this update will not come before Thursday morning.
-
Do the Fish ride in cargo or First Class? :P
-

Always a good idea to have a styro or two, depending on the amount of fish each person ordered.

Okay, here is what I know at this point:
The order was dropped off at the airport in Texas and has been booked on the early morning flight for tomorrow.
Providing there are no delays from weather the shipment should get to Metro Airport and be ready for pickup right around noon at the Southwest Air Cargo building.
I would like everyone that ordered to PM me your cell phone numbers so I can let you know if there has been a delay.
Also, for those people meeting at the airport, as long as the flight is on time I plan to only be there until 12:30.
Therefore, if you are running late it is imperative that you call me.
Also, please PM me if you plan to meet at the airport.
My cell~(248)982-3576
p.s. I do not send/receive text messages

Ah man... nothing like adding to the suspense of getting the fish home to check them out!
-
It would also be cool to see what everyone ordered. Look forward to future postings.
-
Since my fish did not make this shipment, it will be very difficult to a provide feedback only to say ARGH !
I am still looking to add a couple of Calvus to my tank, specifically an Inkfin and a Muzi Gold Face Calvus, if anyone has any that are 1" or bigger PLEASE let me know.
-

They were just out of stock at the time of filling the order?
-
I'd like to thank Tony for putting the order together. My opinion in no way reflects on him, but rather the company we did business with.
My personal opinion of this order can be summed up as "disappointed"
Of the three species I ordered, two of them had a fish that didn't make it. I felt that the fish should've been bagged in larger bags, and observed several species that appeared to be smaller than advertised on his list (these weren't my fish, but fish that I picked up for others to make it easier for them to get home.
I guess I feel with the prices that he was charging, I expected more.
-
Yeah - I totally understand that they were out of stock when the order was filled...
I had my hopes up that I was finally replacing the two fish that I had killed...
Just a little disappointed that they were not included.
I would also like to THANK Tony for managing this order, it's is not easy having to deal with so many people's inquiries about the order and then for some fish not being shipped having to deal with those people as well. I do not envy Tony's position at all... THANK YOU TONY !
-
Huge appreciation to Tony! I am ansolutely thrilled to finally have these guys. Unfortunately 3 were lost in shipping and one did not make my long drive home with them... Now I'm concerned about getting the gender ratio I'm shooting for with only 11 (optimistically assuming no further losses). Also, ten of these fish seem smaller than advertised, whole one is considerably larger than the rest and showing enough aggression in the acclimation bucket that i had to srperate him/her. I'm hoping the rockwork in the actual tank will make that less of an issue - but, while experienced in fish keeping, this is my first adventure in cichlids and was hoping not to start out at a disadvantage. I'm not sure how I feel yet - I guess that is likely to depend on how things pan out in the near future.
Hope everyone is having fun with their new additions!
-Jamie
-
I would really like to see some pictures when everyone gets home! I saw a lot of stuff I really wanted but just wasn't in the budget for me this time around.
-
ATTENTION PLEASE.... The people that ordered fish and had fish that did not survive, I need you to email me pics of the DOA's if it's not already too late. I am trying to get credit for the fish that died. Unfortunately, it will be a credit towards a future order, not a refund (which is standard procedure). The only refund will be for the items that were not shipped, i.e. Matt's Julidochromis and dkoch's 2 Altolamps.
Also, please be sure to post any opinions and/or complaints so I can forward them along.
-
Oh, crap! I didn't even think to take a picture! I just got rid of the dead one before my kiddo noticed it!
-

Just snap a quick pic if you lose any others Jamie...I meant to tell you before you left Highland Tropical but I got distracted getting Dominic his fish. :-[
-
Good news, none arrived dead.
(6) Compressiceps, all look good. One even bigger than I thought it would be.
(1) Peacock, nice.
(1) Peacock ok size, but beat up and very suncken in belly.
(2) Peacocks, VERY small. Had to remove an existing fish from the tank or they would have been eaten for sure.
(3) Mbuna... I think I bought feeder fish. Very small...doubtful if they will make it.
Guess I need to make sure I get 3"+ fish from now on.
So, one beat up, sickly looking fish. That's all I can really complain about. When it said 1" fish... they mean 1" fish.
-
I guess I feel with the prices that he was charging, I expected more.
I'm sorry to read. I'm frugal when it comes to my fish hobby and was surprised at the prices being charged for a lot of what was offered. I hoped it would have swung the other way for you guys and the fish were bigger than advertised and packaged better.
When it said 1" fish... they mean 1" fish.
My impression from the hobby of breeding cichlids, if you really intend to turn a sufficient profit to warrant doing it as a business, you grow them yourself for as little time as possible before selling them. Despite knowing this, I don't come anywhere close to breaking even - people typically don't realize how small 1" really is unless they put a few to a ruler.
-
Will do, Tony. There is only one I'm still feeling iffy about - aside from concerns about the lather one wreaking havoc. I've put the smaller ten in their tank. I'm thinking im going to continue to QT the larger one for a little while si the smaller ones can stake out their territory, then add the slightly larger fish. Does this seem like a sound idea to you more experienced folks? If so, how long should I wait before I add him/her in, do you think? I don't want to turn the tables the other way, either!
-
Tony, Thank you for putting this together & going out of your way for me.
I'm VERY pleased with my fish. They were listed at 1.5"& they came in at 2-2.5". The smallest two are a bit chewed up. But, IMO that's to be expected as all of them were in the same bag for a significant amount of time.
-

What are all the fish everyone ordered? I ordered some saulosi and have them accliminating right now. Some are bigger than expected. Thanks Tony for putting this together and thanks Dan for picking my fish up for me.
-
jcunningham, mine were saulosi as well, but very small save for one - who is beating up on everybody else. I lost a few in shipping and one driving home from picking them up (I live all the way in grand rapids). Tony said they bagged the larger and smaller ones together and that may be why (maybe your fish beat up my fish!!). I think I have one fish that may rival the size of yours....and I'm totally afraid (s)he is going to be a problem right off the bat! They are such little darlings, though, arent they?! I can't stop staring and I couldn't be more excited, even if this isn't 100% what I had in mind!
-
I have to say I am overall disappointed. My Calvus are nowhere near 1" and are completely colorless. Some of the other fish were appropriate size, but in bags way too small. My four nimbochromis polystigma were packed in a bag I would have put only one in, and I would be worried. The Medusa Pleco is around 2.5 - 3" as opposed to 3.5 - 4". The shining exception to the bad was the beautiful Paratilapia sp. "Marolambo" which is the correct size and absolutely stunning. I fortunately have not yet had any deaths either. If the fish grow up nice, I might take it all back, but:
Sorry Dave I shall not be recommending your services to anybody at this time.
-

If you can keep them separated for awhile, do so. You can get the smaller ones to grow out faster by feeding them twice a day and doing frequent water changes. If you have to put them together, try placing a few small diameter pieces of PVC (just a few inches long) in the tank so the smaller ones have a place where they can hide.
-
Thank you for the advice, Marty. I will do that!
-
One of the Mbuna has disappeared and same with one of the Peacocks. :(
On a good note... we have (7) of the Compressiceps! Ordered (6) ;D
-
Well, here is my opinions/comments on this order:
1) The fish I personally ordered all came in alive.
2) Two out of the three species I ordered were the advertised size; one was quite a bit smaller though.
3) The Altolamprologus that others ordered were so small that if they were submitted for one of our auctions, as the Auction Chair I would have refused them for being under the 1" rule. For me to do that they have to be closer to 1/2" which is exactly how the fish from Dave's arrived. Now I expected the Altolamprologus to be small since they were advertised at 1" but IMHO they were too small to ship. However, taking their size into consideration, I do believe the fact that none perished in transit was a positive outcome.
4) The Pseudotropheus saulosi that others ordered had a significant size discrepancy... about 1/3 were larger than advertised and the rest were a lot smaller than advertised...that was an issue IMHO because they were shipped together in one large bag, which was obviously the reason for the DOA's.
5) There was a group of Julidochromis that were ordered, paid for, and included on the invoice but were not in the shipping box. This was an honest mistake on Dave's part but really should not happen with this size order. I am still waiting for the refund on them which Dave assures me will be taken care of.
6) The small bag sizes were an issue with a couple of the species.
7) Several other species that were ordered by others also seemed under the size advertized...a few were larger, but that does not help the people that received the undersized fish.
-
Hey Tony Fish
Big thanks on the efforts.
The fry I received are doing ok when I can find them (LOL)
Please remember that I also ordered some inkfins that did not come in
What was Dave's reasoning in sending the fish fish so small that they could be beat up by some tuff brine shrimp?
Was it just to "close the deal"?
All the Best
Rob

I have a feeling the 140 gallon is going to end up with a landscaping redesign tonight! I will probably take the Livingstoni out when I am chasing the little guys, as I think he may just eat them without something in the tank to hide in.
-
Caught both the little fellas last night. Now hopefully their tails heal up and they grow some so they can go back in down the road.
-
I'm going to be getting some fish either in the next day or so, or next week from dave if anyone wants to join me? I live in Grand Rapids so pick up would need to be here on the west side... Anyone interested?
