Petenia experience?
« on: April 20, 2017, 02:38:22 PM »
Has anyone here kept Petenia splendida before? I'm thinking of getting a group, waiting until they're large enough to pair off, and then keeping a pair.

From what I understand - 180gal is the minimum for these guys, right?

Are they are any other non-cichlid dithery-type fish I could put with a pair in an 180g tank? Sounds like they'll eat everything that fits into their mouth, but there must be something large enough to stay out of trouble? Or perhaps I'll just have my pair, and keep it at that! I know I could put other large cichlids in with them.

Not sure how many central american cichlid lovers there are in this group, but I'd love to be able to brainstorm with folk that have experience. Other species I've been thinking about (instead of Petenia, not with) are various Cryptoheros species or ex-Cichlasoma/Mayaheros urophthalmus.

Nice! What's your future plan for them? Will you need to pare down/upgrade tanks at some point?

Thanks.  I'm playing it by ear with them.  I'll probably only end up keeping one pair,  but I'm limited to a 135gal Max (72x18 footprint)
