Removing Fry from Egg tank
« on: March 17, 2016, 12:07:18 PM »
So I pulled my severum eggs to a separate tank (parents kept eating them) with Methyl Blue in it and now that they have hatched, I want to know what method to use to safely get them out of the blue water so I can get them in with a filter again.  I know someone mentioned swirling them up into a plastic  container in the tank, but I wasn't sure if there were other methods.

Also, how much methyl blue will mess with my filter?  Should I make sure there is no old water in their new tank, or is some okay?  Worried about it killing off the filter.

throw a bit of activated carbon into your filter beforehand and it will remove any residual medication from the system...I used to gently siphon my non-free swimming fry off the substrate

Id just do a water change,  add the filter & then toss in some carbon.  Why even transfer them to a third tank?

Well they are in a bare bottom tank  with no filtration currently, just for hatching purposes. If the carbon will pull out the meds, I may just try that though.  I have a ton of hang on filters that are not being used.

HOB filters sometimes suck fry into them. And depending on how fast you find them, they might die. I'm posting 2 pics for you. If you want, you can try one of these two methods. 1. Stick the blue filter over the intake of the HOB, but I'm not sure the fry won't stick to it. 2. Make a cheap sponge filter by adding a piece of air tubing and airstone, with heater suction cup to hold to tank.

I got a box of 2 from a chain pet store CHEAP. They come with carbon in them. Dump out about half the carbon. Stuff the tube, ect, down in it. KEEP the lil round piece of filter that's in the top. Cut it half way through, the. Stuff it around the tube to help hold the tube in. Steal a lil good bacteria from an existing filter to seed it. Keep up WC and testing for a few weeks to make sure the seeding is working fine. After the meds are gone, dump the carbon out. Carbon releases what's collected back into the water around the 6 week mark.
Every fish needs a tank!❤️

Well I had to be out of town for a night and it went to hell.  But I feel better prepared for next time for sure.
